Feb. 11 - WEXFORD, Pa. – Bethany College junior Kaitlyn McCormick (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) has been chosen as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 11.
The 5-7 guard led the Bison (12-9, 7-3) to a pair of wins last week by averaging 13.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game. Against Thiel last Wednesday, BC fell behind 35-27 at halftime, but the Green and White rallied for the win by outscoring the Tomcats 51-32 in the second half. McCormick totaled 11 of those points after intermission and went on to finish with a career-high 19. She also matched her career-best with eight rebounds, made four steals and passed out three assists to aid in Bethany’s completion of a season sweep from Thiel with the 78-67 victory.
On Saturday at Saint Vincent, McCormick was instrumental again in a big second half effort. The game was tied 31-31 at the break, but Bethany posted a 35-26 advantage in the final 20 minutes to come away with a 66-57 triumph. All eight of McCormick’s points came in the second half and she also finished with five boards and two assists.
McCormick is playing a key role in Bethany’s best season since 2003-04. She has played in all 21 games, including seven starts, and is averaging 7.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. The Bison co-captain is also shooting a team-best 49.6 percent from the floor and hitting 69.6 percent from the foul line.
“Since January, Kat has really stepped up her game,” said Bethany assistant coach Erin Eaton. “Her contributions have been huge in every one of our wins. She plays extremely hard every game and really deserves this honor.”
A psychology major, Kaitlyn is the daughter of Connie Bitzer and Tim McCormick of Wheeling, W.Va.
