BISON WOMEN CLAIM FIFTH STRAIGHT WITH 67-59 WIN AT GROVE CITY
Feb. 11 - GROVE CITY, Pa. – Senior Kaitlyn McCormick (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) scored all 13 of her points in the second half to help the Bethany women’s basketball team pull away for a 67-59 victory at Grove City Wednesday night.
The win was the Bison’s (12-10, 6-5) fifth in a row and eighth in the last nine games, while the Wolverines dropped to 9-13 and 5-7.
The teams swapped runs throughout the first half. Grove City started the game with a 12-4 spurt, which was followed by 10 straight points by Bethany. The Wolverines answered back with seven in a row, but the Bison closed the half with a 13-6 run that was capped with a lay-up from senior Renee Brandenburg (Avella, Pa.) late in the half to give the Green and White a 27-25 lead heading into break.
There were three ties and two lead changes in the first six minutes of the second half before Bethany took the lead for good on two foul shots by Brandenburg with 13:42 to play. BC’s margin was 41-37 when a three from freshman Renee Shepherd (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) started a 9-0 run, which was capped by four straight points from McCormick. The lead grew to as large as 15 (56-41) on a steal and lay-up from McCormick with 6:30 to play.
The Wolverines didn’t go quietly, as they scored eight in a row and an 11-2 run cut the BC lead to 58-52. Sophomore Stacy Goode (Pleasant Plain, Ohio/Little Miami) came back with a free throw and then a lay-up, which was followed by a McCormick foul shot to run the lead back to 10 and the Bison went on to win their fourth consecutive trip to Grove City.
McCormick went 7-for-8 from the foul line as she reached 13 points and she added six steals and five rebounds. Also reaching double figures was Shepherd and Goode with 11 each. For the game, the Bison forced 27 GCC turnovers, which they converted into 33 points.
Grove City was led by Christine Slater, who recorded her PAC-leading eighth double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
The Bison, who are now a game and a half in front of Grove City for third place in the conference, will be in action again Saturday when they travel to Chatham for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
