Bison Women’s Hoops Reels in Muskies

Nov. 18 – NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Led by four players in double figures, the Bethany College women’s basketball team (2-0) secured their second-straight victory by defeating Muskingum University, 91-83.

The Green & White were ready from the start in the contest, jumping out to an early five-point lead (9-4) over the first four minutes of action. The run saw four different Bison score including juniors Mikyla Tipton (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) and Sami Schott (Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah), as well as sophomore Carly Grady (Keyser, W.Va./Keyser) and Hayley Holenka (Shadyside, Ohio/Shadyside).

The Bison would then extend their lead to seven points (26-19) with 8:16 remaining in the first half after freshman Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) hit a pair of free throws.

The Muskies would respond, however, outscoring the Bison 15-8 over the next six minutes of action to tie the game at 34-34.

Bethany and Muskingum would then battle back-and-fourth until Holenka’s layup put the Bison up 42-40 entering intermission.

The first half was all about Tipton, who led the Bison with 10 points, including shooting two-of-three from distance.  Sophomore Lauren Simpson (Washington, Pa./Trinity) also played well in the first frame, scoring nine points on four-of-six from the field.

Muskingum came out dialed in over the first nine minutes of the second stanza, outscoring the Bison 25-18 to take a 65-60 advantage.

Bethany stormed back, retaking a 69-67 lead at the 8:14 mark, after Tipton scored her 14th point of the night.

The Bison would add to their lead, going on 10-4 run to take a 79-71 lead with five minutes to play. Simpson capped the run, draining a three-point shot for her 14th point of the evening.

The Bison would then hold the lead for good en route to an impressive 91-83 triumph.

Leading the way for the Bison offense was Tipton, who scored a career-high 19 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Daugherty also had a career night, scoring 16 points and corralling two rebounds.

Others that played well included Simpson, Holenka and Schott. Simpson scored 14 points, while Holenka added 13 points for her second-straight game in double figures. Schott dominated the glass, grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Bison will look for their third-straight win on Friday, Nov. 21 as they play in the Baldwin Wallace Tournamen and take on host Baldwin Wallace at 7:00 p.m.
