Dec. 29 – DELAWARE, Ohio – The Bethany College women’s basketball team (3-5, 2-1 PAC) couldn’t overcome a slow start, falling to Ohio Wesleyan University 93-58 on Sunday evening.
Ohio Wesleyan used a 15-2 outburst early in the first half to take control of the contest. The run was capped off with a layup by LaNiece McRae with 14:27 remaining in the first half.
Taylor Verrico’s (Monaca, Pa./Quigley) two-point basket would help bring the Bison to within six points (20-14) at the 7:25 mark in the first half, but that was as close at Bethany would get.
The Battling Bishops would end the first half on a 23-8 run, increasing the lead to 21 points (43-22) heading into intermission.
The second half was much of the same for the Battling Bishops, as they were able to control both ends of the court, en route to a 93-58 victory.
Bethany’s offense was led by Verrico and Sami Schott (Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah). Verrico scored a team-high 11 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Schott notched 11 rebounds and tallied four points.
Others aiding the Bison attack were Lauren Simpson (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and Gabrielle Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range). Simpson chipped in with six points and three rebounds, while Naples registered seven points and three rebounds.
The women’s squad is back in action on Monday, Dec, 30, when they will play in the consolation game of the Bishop/Classic Hoops for Hope Tournament at Ohio Wesleyan. Tipoff for the contest is slated for 1:00 p.m
