Nov. 19- MARIETTA, Ohio- The Bethany College women’s basketball team had three players score in double figures but it would fall 97-56 in the season opener at Marietta on Tuesday evening.
The Pioneers would open the game on a 16-4 run getting baskets from five different players in the first four and a half minutes of the game. Bethany would then cut the lead back to single digits, as freshman Lauren Simpson (Washington, Pa./Trinity) connected on her first three-pointer of the night with 13:11 ramining to cut the advantage to 16-8.
The Pioneers would answer back, going on a 9-0 run that was capped by a Tori Dixon three-pointer to give Marietta the 25-8 lead with just over 11 minutes remaining in the frame. Marietta would then close out the half on a 25-15 run, to extend the advantage to 50-23 at the break.
Offensively, Sami Schott (Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) led the way for the Bison as she totaled 13 points on the day. Simpson finished the contest with 12 points off the bench, shooting four-of-six from the field, including four-of-five from behind the three-point arc. Taylor Verrico (Monaca, Pa./Quigley) also finished in double figures with 10 and freshman Alexis Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range) totaled eight points on the day.
Bethany returns to Hummel Field House for its next game when it hosts Penn State-Beaver for its home opener on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 2:00 p.m.
