Nov. 25 – BETHANY, W.Va. – Despite freshman Kelsea Daugherty’s (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) first career double-double, the Bethany College women’s basketball team (3-2) dropped their home opener to Marietta College, 78-67 on Tuesday night.
Things didn’t start off well for the Bison, as the Pioneers raced out to an early 16-0 start. Amisha Herd capped the run by dropping a bucket at the 13:25 mark.
The Bison would begin to cut into the Marietta lead, embarking on a 10-4 run over the next four minutes of action to slice the deficit in half (20-10). Daugherty supplied six points, while sophomore Alexis Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range) and junior Mikyla Tipton (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) added two each.
After trailing by 10 points (30-20) with 4:49 remaining in the first frame, the Bison then outscored the Pioneers 10-4 over the remaining four minutes to enter halftime trailing by only four points (34-30).
The first half was all about Daugherty, who scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds. Sophomores Hayley Holenka (Shadyside, Ohio/Shadyside) and Gabrielle Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range) also turned in nice first half performances. Holenka tallied a team-high 10 points, while Naples corralled seven rebounds.
The Bison were active on the boards in the first frame, outrebounding the visitors 26-25, including getting their hands on nine offensive rebounds.
The second fame saw the Pioneers extend their lead to nine points (39-30) in just the first minute, before the Bison cut the lead to 41-37 on a Daugherty free throw make at the 15:34 mark.
The game would see both teams battle back and forth over the next five minutes, until the Bison finally tied the game at 51-51 following a pair of free throws from Tipton with 10:07 remaining in the contest.
Marietta would respond, however, going on an 11-2 run to take a commanding nine-point lead with 7:01 left to play.
The Green & White would show their grit, embarking on a mini 7-0 run over a three-minute span to slice the Marietta lead to just three points (64-61). Junior Sami Schott (Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) capped the run by converting on a free throw at the 4:32 mark.
Unfortunately, that would be as close the Bison would come, as they were eventually defeated by the Pioneers, 78-67.
Leading the Bison charge included Daugherty, Holenka and Schott. Daugherty had a big night, notching her first career double-double. She also notched career-highs in both points (19) and rebounds (11). Holenka scored in double figures for the fourth time of the season as she finished with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Schott was her usual self, netting nine points, while grabbing six rebounds.
Others that played well included Tipton and Naples. Tipton finished with nine points and five rebounds, while Naples had eight boards and two blocks.
Bethany will hit the court next on Wednesday, Dec. 3 as they open Presidents’ Athletic Conference play by hosting the Bearcats of Saint Vincent College. Tipoff for the contest is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m.
