Jan. 11 – BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College women’s basketball team (3-10, 2-4 PAC) fell to Saint Vincent College (78-53) in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
Over the first 10 minutes of the contest, Saint Vincent stormed out to a 28-15 advantage. During that span, Taylor Mathers scored eight points, while Mara Benvenuti notched seven.
The Bison would not lay down however, as they embarked on an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to just four points (30-26) with 4:02 remaining in the first period. The run was capped off when Sami Schott (Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) split a pair of free throws.
The Bearcats would end the first half going on a 6-2 run, en route to a 36-28 halftime advantage.
The second half began with the Bearcats pushing their lead to 10 points (40-30) after Elle Collins converted on a pair of free throws at the 17:48 mark of the second frame.
The Bison would it give their best shot however, pulling to within three points (40-37) after Mikyla Tipton (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) drove to the basket for a layup with 16:22 left to play.
Saint Vincent would then proceed to outscore Bethany 38-16 over the last 15 minutes of the ball game, defeating the Bison 78-53.
Leading the way for the Bison were Taylor Verrico (Monaca, Pa./Quigley) and Gabrielle Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range). Verrico finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. Naples added 10 points and grabbed seven boards.
The women will be back on the court on Wednesday, Jan. 14, when they play host to PAC foe Chatham University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
