 Bethany Loses To Defiance At Marietta Inviational

Sept. 7- MARIETTA, Ohio – The Bethany College women’s soccer team (0-4) fell, 3-1, to Defiance (2-1) in the opening round match of the Marietta Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Marietta Field. 

Claire Turner earned her second victory of the season for the Yellow Jackets as she recorded one save on the afternoon. 

Freshman goalkeeper Cheyann McQuain (Fairmont, W.Va./East Fairmont) started her second straight game at goalie for the Bison and performed well making five saves in the game. 

Karly Smith gave Defiance a 1-0 lead with her first of two goals on the afternoon in the ninth minute. Smith received a pass from teammate Erica Islas and dribbled it into the eighteen yard box and fired it in the lower left corner of the net. 

Sarah London (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) tied the game at one with her first goal of the season in the 58th minute. She managed to maneuver around the goalie and shot the ball into the left corner of the goal. 

Smith put the Yellow Jackets ahead for good with her second goal of the game in the 70th minute as she fired a shot from 15 yards out into the upper right hand corner of the net past the Bison net minder. 

Defiance would add late goal in the 79th minute and would go on for the 3-1 victory. 

Bethany returns to action tomorrow when they face host Marietta at 3:00 p.m.
