Nov. 2-BEAVER FALLS, Pa.- Freshman Julie Slezak scored her 10th goal of the season, but the Bethany College women’s soccer team lost, 2-1, to Geneva in its Presidents’ Athletic Conference season finale on Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field.
The ten goals for Slezak is the most by a freshman since Cassie Spalding scored 11 in 2008.
Sophomore Whitney Sparks (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) got her second straight start in net for the Bison, and tied a season-high with 11 saves.
The Golden Tornadoes had the first chance to take the lead, as they fired two shots on net in the first five minutes of the game, but Sparks was up to the task, saving both shots to keep the game scoreless.
Sophomore Bri Steich (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) was close to giving the Bison the lead in the 7th minute. She put a shot on net but it narrowly missed the post.
Kimberly Orihel gave Geneva a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute, as she scored her seventh goal of the season.
The Bison were outshot 15-2 in the opening half, but Sparks was impressive in net for Bethany as she recorded seven saves and the Bison would trail just 1-0 at halftime.
Bethany tied the game at one in the 58th minute, as Slezak put a shot on goal that hit the crossbar and went into the net for her 10th goal of the season.
Geneva would answer back with the game-winner just a minute later. Caroline Wright crossed the ball into the center of the eighteen yard box, and Heidi Mann was on the receiving end and put it into the net for her eighth goal of the season.
Bethany ends the season with a 3-12 record and seniors Lindsay Sparr (Shreve, Ohio/Triway), Haylee Acree (Middlebourne, W.Va./Tyler Consolidated) and Sara Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) wore the Green and White for a final time. Slezak led the Bison with 10 goals and 23 points on the season.
