Oct. 25- LATROBE, Pa.- The Bethany College women’s soccer team lost, 1-0, at Saint Vincent in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference match on Friday afternoon.
Freshman Julie Slezak (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) continued her impressive freshman year, as she led the Bison with five shots on the afternoon.
Sophomore goalkeeper Whitney Sparks (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) led Bethany with nine saves in the game.
The Bison looked as if they would take a 1-0 in the fifth minute, when freshman Brittany Fullbright (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) put a great shot on net, but it hit the cross bar and the game would remain scoreless.
Meghan Smith scored the game’s only goal in the 14th minute to give the Bearcats a 1-0 advantage.
Head Coach Peter Parakikis had to go to his bench in the 30th minute and substitute Sparks at goalkeeper after freshman Cheyann McQuain (Fairmont, W.Va./East Fairmont) was injured.
Sparks was great in net for Bethany and kept the Bearcats off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game with nine saves, which was her second-highest saves total in a game this season.
Freshman Madison Cochran (Grafton, W.Va./Grafton) had the best scoring chance of the second half for the Bison in the 72nd minute. She received a pass from Slezak and Cochran toe-poked the ball just wide of the post as the Bearcats goalkeeper collided with her.
The Bison fought the entire time but couldn’t manage to get the ball past Cassie Overly as Saint Vincent took the game 1-0.
Bethany returns to action on Tuesday afternoon for its home finale, when it hosts Washington and Jefferson at 3 p.m.
