History Club Celebrates Constitution Day
In honor of Constitution Day on September 17, the History Club hosted a display in the cafeteria that featured free copies of pocket Constitutions and an invitation for students to sign their names with a quill pen on a giant sheet of parchment. Students could also vote on what they consider the most important amendment to the Constitution, as well as choose their favorite from a list of historically proposed amendments that failed. Dozens of people stopped by to pick up a copy of the Constitution, vote on their favorite amendments and take a short quiz to test their knowledge of the Constitution.

In the results of the amendment polls, students selected the First Amendment (freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and right to petition the government) as the most important, followed closely by the Thirteenth (forbidding slavery). The most popular failed amendment among Bethany students was a proposal that a national vote be required before the U.S. declares war and that all individuals voting in favor of war must volunteer for the military.
