Bethany College Receives National Recognition for Community Service
The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) recently named Bethany College a national leader among institutions of higher education for its support of volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. Bethany was admitted to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for engaging its students, faculty and staff in meaningful service that achieves measurable results in the community.

Gerald E. Stebbins Named Dean of Students at Bethany College
Gerald E. “Jerry” Stebbins has been named Dean of Students at Bethany College, according to Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of the College. He will assume the position on July 1.

Valedictorian April O’Brien Receives Oreon E. Scott Award
Valedictorian April M. O’Brien of Columbus, Ohio, completed her college career with top honors during Bethany College’s 2011 Commencement ceremony on May 14. Dr. Darin E. Fields, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty, presented O’Brien with the College’s Oreon E. Scott Award, given annually to the senior graduating with the highest academic standing.

Pittsburgh Pirates Board Chairman Robert Nutting Addresses Bethany College 2011 Graduates
President of Ogden Newspapers, Inc. and Chairman of the Board of the Pittsburgh Pirates Robert Nutting spoke to Bethany College's 2011 graduating class as part of the institution's 171st Anniversary Commencement Weekend. Nutting delivered his remarks, "Your Most Valuable Gift: Time," to Bethany's 135 graduating seniors on May 14 in the Nutting Gymnasium of the Hummel Field House.

Thomas P. Johnson Jr. College Center Dedicated
On Friday, May 13, 2011, President Scott D. Miller dedicated the Thomas P. Johnson Jr. College Center in recognition of Johnson's lifetime of service to Bethany.

Johnson, a trustee from 1990 until 2010, continued his family’s long line of leadershipat Bethany. From the time our founder Alexander Campbell named Thomas W. Phillips Sr. a trustee in 1865, the Phillips-Johnson family has supported every president at the College. Most recently, Johnson's son Asa, a New York philanthropist, has assumed the role of trustee.

The Thomas P. Johnson Jr. College Center houses Enrollment Management, Student Services, Renner Art Gallery and the Department of Communications and Media Arts in Bethany House. It also includes Benedum Commons —Boomer’s, the bookstore, Ogden Dining Room, Agostino Room and the Bethany Club.  

Baccalaureate, Commencement Ceremonies Available Online

Rev. Dr. Todd Adams, Associate General Minister and Vice President and Chief of Staff for the General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), gave the address at Baccalaureate. Bethany Board of Trustees member Robert Nutting, President and CEO of Ogden Newspapers, Inc.; Chairman of the Board of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chairman of Seven Springs Mountain Resort, provided the Commencement address.

Economics Honor Society Inducts New Members
Five students were recently inducted into Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE), the International Honor Society in Economics. The new inductees are Cassidy Drilling, Eric Fudala, Samantha Hall, Alexander Stubbs and Alyssa Schrecengost. Current ODE students are Tom Kisner and Jacob Nixon. The Department of Economics and Business held a reception for the members, where they heard from President Miller; Chair of the Department of Economics and Business Professor Wilfrid Csaplar Jr.; and Professor Randolph Cooey about student accomplishments.

Old Main Journal Switches to Summer Schedule
The Old Main Journal will switch from a weekly to monthly publication schedule for the summer. The next Old Main Journal will be released on June 17 with the second summer issue scheduled for July 15. The Old Main Journal will resume its regular weekly publication on August 19.

Jordan’s Leadership Highlighted in The Lawyer
Greg Jordan ‘81, global managing partner of Pittsburgh-based Reed Smith, was recently featured in The Lawyer’s May 16 edition. The article examined Jordan’s successful leadership strategies and the Reed Smith-Richards Butler merger.

Trio of Bison Recognized with All-PAC Distinction
Bethany College senior Tyler Dillinger (McKeesport, Pa.) and sophomore Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) were named First Team All-PAC and junior T.J. Zarewicz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) earned Second Team when the all-conference teams were released Tuesday.


Bison Break Two More Records at Allegheny Invitational
The Bethany College track and field teams continued a strong season Friday, as two more records were broken and one first place earned at the unscored Gator Invitational, hosted by Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa.
