Bethany Announces Addition of Marching Band for 2013-14
Bethany College has announced the addition of a marching band for the 2013-14 academic year, according to Bethany President Dr. Scott D. Miller. The Stampede Marching Band will be directed by J. Matthew White, lecturer in music at Bethany.

ECHO Student Literary Contest
Bethany students are encouraged to submit their poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction to the ECHO student literary contest. The third annual Echo contest is open to undergraduate students currently enrolled at Bethany College, Heidelberg University, Hiram College, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, and Muskingum University. Each work will be judged as an individual entry, and entrants may win more than one prize. Prizes in each category will be $175, $100, and $50. Interested students may visit the ECHO contest website http://echocompetition.wordpress.com/ or contact Dr. Jessie Janeshek for more information. The deadline for entries is February 4, 2013..

Nominations Sought for President’s Awards
Bethany President Scott D. Miller is again seeking nominations from all campus constituencies for the President’s Awards for Excellence in Performance. One will be awarded to a member of the faculty and another to a member of the staff. Recipients will be announced during the annual Honors Day Convocation. Nominations should be sent directly to the President at President’s Office, Bethany College, Bethany, WV 26032.

Communications and Media Arts
Dr. Jason K. Smith, Assistant Professor of Communications & Media Arts, will be presenting his paper: “This is Philip Defranco and You Have Been ‘Philled-In’”: Corporate Exploitation of YouTube ‘Circuitry,’ at the Annual Popular Culture Association /American Culture Association Conference held on March 27-30, 2013 at the Wardman Park Marriott in Washington, D.C.

Humanities - World Languages
Dr. Harald Menz, Professor of World Languages and Cultures & Director of International Studies, has been invited to serve a two-year term on the FACDIS (The West Virginia Consortium for Faculty and Course Development in International Studies) Steering committee. The Steering Committee (made up of six Institutional Representatives plus the FACDIS Director) makes decisions about travel grant funding and the selection of participants for other FACDIS special programs, including the annual Scholar-Diplomat Program."!

Give to Bethany College From Your IRA
Thanks to recent legislation, donors aged 70-and-a-half or older are once again eligible to “roll over” up to $100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charitable organizations, such as Bethany College, without having to pay income taxes on the transfer. There are two special provisions:

1) Qualified distributions made by Feb. 1, 2013, may be counted retroactively for the 2012 tax year.
2) A taxpayer who took a distribution from an IRA in December 2012 may make a contribution to a qualified charity before Feb. 1, 2013 and consider this a direct transfer.

If you qualify for an IRA rollover, visit the Bethany College planned-giving website for more information.

Bethany Alumni Association Now Accepting Nominations for Alumni Awards
The Bethany College Alumni Association is now accepting nominations for the annual Alumni Awards.  Award recipients are selected by the Internal Affairs Committee of Alumni Council from nomination forms submitted by alumni and friends of Bethany. Recipients will be honored at a banquet during Alumni Weekend festivities slated for May 3-May 5, 2013. Bethany Accepting Nominations for Alumnus of the Year Award
The Alumnus of the Year Award was established by the Office of the President to recognize outstanding loyalty and accomplishment by alumni of Bethany College. The award recognizes not one achievement, but is reserved for those who have attained and maintained excellence throughout their career and in their service to others.

  1. Must hold a degree from Bethany College.
  2. Must demonstrate outstanding professional accomplishment and personal deeds on behalf of Bethany College.
  3. Nominations may come from all constituency groups of the College.  Nominations should be sent to:

  1. Nominations should be made in the form of a formal letter detailing the strengths of the nominee.
  2. The Director of Alumni and Parent Relations & President's Cabinet will serve as the screening committee for the award.

Pyles Breaks Fly Record to Highlight Bison’s Double-Dual at Chatham
Bethany College freshman Alexi Pyles (Los Angeles, Calif./GHCHS) broke the school record in the 100 Butterfly which had stood for more than 25 years to highlight the day for the Bethany College women’s swimming and diving team’s double-dual meet at Chatham with Saint Vincent.

Bison Players Recognized by Collegiate Baseball
For the 23rd straight year, the Bethany College baseball team has had players selected by Collegiate Baseball as Players to Watch for the 2013 campaign.

Bison Offense Returns to Hot-Shooting Ways in 90-49 Victory
After making just nine three-pointers in its last two losses, the Bethany College men’s basketball team sank 14 triples en route to posting a 90-49 victory at Geneva Wednesday night to improve to 7-3 in the PAC.

Bethany Drops Road Contest at Geneva 56-50
Two players for the Bethany College women’s basketball team scored in double digits, but the Bison were unable to overcome a solid effort from host Geneva in a 56-50 Golden Tornado victory Wednesday night.
