Thornburgh Gives Fall Convocation Address at Bethany
Former United States Attorney General and Pennsylvania Governor Richard L. “Dick” Thornburgh helped Bethany College mark the start of its 169th year on Thursday by delivering the Fall Convocation address to students, faculty, staff and friends of the College. Thornburgh was also conferred with an honorary Doctorate of Laws by Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of the College, during the ceremony held in Commencement Hall at historic Old Main.

Bethany Welcomes Dr. Peter Morgan as Renner Visiting Scholar
Dr. Peter M. Morgan, one of the foremost authorities on the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in America, is Bethany College’s first Renner Visiting Scholar of the 2008-09 academic year. The 1961 Bethany graduate will also serve as interim pastor at Bethany Memorial Church and chaplain of the College.

Sutherland Receives Bortz Faculty Prize at Bethany College
The Bethany College faculty has chosen Dr. Patrick Sutherland, Professor of Communication and Chair of the Department of Communication, to receive the College’s 2008 Bortz Faculty Prize for Innovative Use of Technology in the Classroom.

Academic Awards Presented at Fall Convocation
Bethany College Provost Dr. Michael Mihalyo presented the Anna Ruth Bourne Cup to the Alpha Xi Delta sorority during Thursday’s Fall Convocation at Commencement Hall. Alpha Xi Delta posted a 3.4667 grade-point average for the spring semester, the highest GPA for any campus women’s social group. The W. Kirk Woolery Cup, presented to the male social group with the highest GPA during the spring semester, went to the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. Phi Kappa Tau had a 3.1595 GPA in the spring.

Following the presentation of the Richard B. Kenney Freshman Leadership Award to Lindsay Sobotka of Weirton, W.Va., Dr. Miller asked the 30 members of the President’s List from the spring semester to stand and be recognized. Students must achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA in a minimum 12 semester hours to qualify for the President’s List. Members of the Dean’s List were also recognized. Students must post a GPA of 3.65 or better in a minimum 12 semester hours to qualify for inclusion on the Dean’s List.

National Political Pundit Speaks at Bethany
The Student Activities Council (SAC) hosted an appearance by national political pundit and historian Rick Shenkman at Wailes Theater on Tuesday night. Shenkman is a New York Times best-selling author whose latest book, Just How Stupid Are We? Facing the Truth About the American Voter, outlines the troubling impact of marketing, misinformation and manipulation by political candidates and the media on the election process.

Shenkman is also the editor and founder of George Mason University’s History News Network and has made numerous national television appearances. He is regularly seen on the Fox News Network, CNN and MSNBC. The College’s Political Awareness Club conducted a voter registration drive in conjunction with Shenkman’s presentation.

Faculty/Staff ID Cards Available at Office of Student Life
Bethany College faculty and staff are encouraged to stop by the Office of Student Life at Bethany House to obtain a new Faculty/Staff ID Card. These cards can be used when purchasing a block meal plan or a specific amount of “Boomer’s Points” for use at all campus dining locations and will also be useful for official identification in the event of an emergency.

The new cards will replace older ID cards that may not be compatible with the current dining system or are simply worn out. The Office of Student Life is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Free Bethany College wallpaper downloads for your laptop or home computer are now just a click or two away on the College website. Computer users have their choice of eight images depicting various familiar Bethany vistas, including Old Main, Gresham Garden, Commencement Hall and the Campbell Mansion.

Homecoming 2008
Homecoming 2008 is just around the corner. The Office of Alumni & Parent Relations is encouraging those planning to attend the festivities to register online at www.bethanywv.edu/alumni/events/homecoming-2008/registration/

Throughout the weekend, many athletic events are scheduled, along with the installation ceremony of Dr. Scott Miller as Bethany’s 19th president. Additionally, Athletic Hall of Fame inductions will take place honoring Edward Blundon ’66, basketball; Daniel Swickard ’72, football; Margaret Fillinger ’86, softball; and Jeff Weekley ’96, baseball.

During the Alumni Awards Banquet, Linda Comins ’77 will be honored with the Distinguished Service to Alma Mater Award and David Jolliffe ’74 will be recognized with the Alumni Community Service Award.

Deadline Approaching for Fall Alumni Exhibit
Alumni artists are invited to submit one or two pieces of their work for inclusion in the Alumni Invitational Exhibit, which will be held Oct. 3-31 in the Renner Union Gallery. Pieces may be executed in any two-dimensional or three-dimensional medium. Alumni are reminded that all work must be received by Sept. 26 in order to be included.

In conjunction with the exhibit, alumni artists will be guests of honor at the annual Homecoming Art Exhibit Reception, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 3 from 8-10 p.m. For additional information, send an e-mail to Professor Kenn Morgan at kmorgan@bethanywv.edu.

Alumni Softball Game Set for Sept. 27
Head coach Jan Forsty and the Bethany College softball team are inviting all former players back to campus on Sept. 27 for the annual Alumni Softball Game. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the Office of Alumni Relations will provide a picnic dinner following the game.

This is a chance for former Bethany softball players to renew old friendships while getting an up-close look at the tremendous strides that have been taken in upgrading the softball facilities. Bethany Home Opener to be Webcast
Bethany fans, you can listen to every snap of this Saturday's football between your Bison and Kentucky Christian University from the comfort of your own home. Bethany's student radio station WVBC 88.1 FM will be broadcasting live from Bison Stadium and the game will also be streamed over the internet through TEAMLINE. To listen to the broadcast for free, just visit www.bethanywv.edu/athletics, click on the TEAMLINE logo and follow the instructions from there to hear first-year Bethany students Nate Tieman and Rebecca Thomas call all the action. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Bison Open Home Schedule Saturday Against Kentucky Christian
Following a disappointing loss in the opener last week, the Bethany College football team will try to rebound in their first home game of the season when they host Kentucky Christian University Saturday. Kickoff at Bison Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Bethany Dops PAC Opener to Thiel
The Bethany College volleyball team fell into a two-set hole Wednesday night and couldn’t climb their way out, as they fell to visiting Thiel (Pa.) College 3-1 (23-25, 15-25, 25-21, 18-25) in the PAC opener for both teams.

Bethany Comes up Short at Franciscan 3-2
Although the Bethany College women’s soccer team held a 27-11 shot advantage, only two found the back of the net and that wasn’t enough in a 3-2 Franciscan (Ohio) University victory Wednesday night.

PAC Power Grove City Bests Bison Tennis
The Bethany College women’s tennis team was defeated Wednesday by Grove City (Pa.) College 9-0 in the Bison’s home and PAC opener.

Muskingum Squeezes Past Bison in OT
Muskingum (Ohio) College’s Cam Jonard headed in the winning goal less than a minute into overtime to give the Muskies a 2-1 triumph over the Bethany College men’s soccer team Sunday afternoon to conclude the “Fuzzy” Williams Memorial Classic at Bethany.

Fourth Annual Hugh 'Tiger' Joyce Golf Outing
Homecoming Weekend 2008 will begin on Friday, Oct. 3, with the 4th Annual Hugh "Tiger" Joyce Golf Scramble. The event will once again be held at picturesque Highland Springs Golf Course in Wellsburg. Registration for the outing begins at 7:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Don't wait until the last minute to sign up however, as registration is limited to the first 144 golfers.
