Disciples of Christ Historical Society Sets Dedication at New Facility

The Disciples of Christ Historical Society will host a building dedication and blessing to celebrate its new home at Bethany College on Saturday, Sept. 10.

Bethany College Senior Wins Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society Award

Bethany College senior Stephanie Sowers was named a recipient of the 2016 Sigma Beta Delta Fellowship and was presented with the award by President Rodenberg on Wednesday, Sept. 7, in Phillips Lounge.

Former Olympian Talks to Bethany Students on Mental Illness and Suicide

Amy Gamble, former United States Olympian, spoke about Mental Illness and Suicide on Thursday, September 8, at 7 p.m. in Phillip's Lounge. Gamble competed with the Women's Handball Team in the 1988 Games held in Seoul, South Korea.

Faculty Spotlight

Bethany Education Professors to Present Research at Three Conferences

Dr. Sherri Theaker, Professor Angela Icard and Dr. Edward Shephard have all been accepted to present research this academic year at three different education conferences. Titled, "Digital Dialogue: A Narrative of Reflective Practices," their research follows teacher candidates about their experiences in working with children on different "Invasion Day" events. Invasion Day is a name given to a learning experience focused on project-based learning, including collaboration and co-teaching.

The following are the conferences that Theaker, Icard and Shephard will present at:

  • 2016 Mentoring Conference, Sponsored by the University of New Mexico Mentoring Institute
  • 2017 Association of Teacher Educator's Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida

Bethany Alum Takes on New Director Role

Alumna Amy Gaffney '04 has taken on a new role as Co-Director of the Writing Center and Oral Communication Center at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. Previously, Gaffney was the Assistant Professor in the Department of Instructional Communication and Research at the University of Kentucky.

Gaffney has had extensive experience in working with faculty from diverse disciplines to integrate multimodal communication into their courses. To learn more about her research, as well as her new role, click here.

Renowned American Physicist to Speak at Annual Lecture Series

Dr. Adrian Melott '68, Bethany Alum and Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Kansas, will speak during Homecoming Weekend at the annual Larry E. Grimes Lecture Series. His presentation is titled, "Blast in the Past: How Supernovae Affected Life on Earth." To learn more about the Series, click here.

Bethany Alum Visits Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center

Dave Sims '75, Root Sports Northwest Commentator for the Seattle Mariners, was recently featured in an article by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. Sims and Jerry Dipoto, Mariners General Manager, both had similar journeys with their cancer battle and met at the Fred Hutch campus to learn about the science driving different cancer therapies. Scholarship and Memorial Service Announced for Passed Professor

The Thompson family and the Alumni Office are honored to announce the T. Gale Thompson Global Awareness Award and memorial service. Please join us on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 11:45 a.m. in the lawn area between Oglebay/Kirkpatrick and Steinman Halls for a remembrance of Gale's life and a dedication of a contemplative bench and a tree planted in his honor.

Dr. Thompson saw real meaning and value traveling and exploring the diversity of cultures and places around the world. During his 35-year tenure at Bethany College, he taught on Semester at Sea, chaperoned multiple student trips, and spent a sabbatical in China. The establishment of this scholarship fund is to assist psychology majors in offsetting the cost Bethany's Global Awareness Core requirement. You can donate to the scholarship here.

We hope you can join us for Homecoming 2016 slated for Oct. 7-8. Classes celebrating reunions include 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, 2015. Events include the 12th Annual Hugh "Tiger" Joyce Golf Scramble, the Installation of Dr. Tamara Nichols Rodenberg as Bethany's 20th President, and the Larry E. Grimes Lecture Series to name a few.

Bethany Celebrating 16th Annual Allison's Run

In conjunction with Homecoming 2016, the 16th Annual Allison's Run, a conversational and recreational run or walk, will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 8, beginning at the Cunningham Soccer Complex located at the intersection of Route 67 and Castleman's Run Road. The cost is $20. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Online registration is now open! If you cannot make the race, but would like to run in Doc Allison's memory you can still do so. Register online and a t-shirt will be mailed out to you. Everyone that would like to pre-register or register to run in Doc's memory on their own can do so here. The first 75 registrants will be given a complimentary T-shirt.

Sponsorships are be accepted now until September 12. You can sponsor the race and have your name included on the shirt. Sponsorship levels are: Bronze--$50-$99, Silver $100-$249, Gold--$250-$499, and Platinum--$500 & up. If interested, please contact the Alumni Office at alumni@bethanywv.edu or 304-829-7299. Twelfth Annual Hugh "Tiger" Joyce Golf Outing

The Bethany Athletic Department is proud to host the 12th Annual Hugh “Tiger” Joyce Golf Outing on Friday, Oct. 7th at Highland Springs Golf Course. The event kicks off Homecoming Weekend and is a great chance for Bethanians from past and more recent times to enjoy a day of golf and fun to support the Green & White Club. The Green & White Club is the athletic department booster club that helps provide additional support for its 22 varsity sports programs. Registration for the Tiger Joyce Golf Outing will begin at 7:30 am on Oct. 7th and shotgun start begins at 8:30 am.

The Bethany College football team defeated Ursinus, 23-13 in the 2016 season opener at Bison Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Bethany Volleyball Drops Pair to Hope and #2 Ranked Wittenberg

The Bethany College volleyball team dropped two matches on Saturday at the Mount Union Tournament. In game one, they fell to Hope College, 3-2, before falling to preseason-ranked #2 Wittenberg, 3-1.

Women's Tennis Takes Loss at Saint Vincent

The Bethany women's tennis team dropped their second match of the season in a 9-0 loss at Saint Vincent on Thursday.

The Bethany men's soccer team fell in their home opener Wednesday afternoon to Marietta, 3-1​.

Senior linebacker Donovan Hayden (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) has been named the Presidents' Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his opening day performance against Ursinus.
