Bethany Students Participate in Pittsburgh Discussions About Career Development, National Issues
The words of Dr. Robert McCann, CEO of UBS Group Americas, a 1980 alumnus of Bethany College and vice chair of the Bethany College Board of Trustees, offered a challenge and reassurance to Bethany students who attended several career-development forums on leadership October 18 in Pittsburgh.

Bethany College to Celebrate National Bison Day
Bethany College is planning numerous activities for Nov. 1-2 in celebration of National Bison Day.

Cancer Memorial Blood Drive to be held at Bethany College
The Pre-Health Professions Club recently announced it will be hosting a Cancer Memorial Blood Drive from 1-7 p.m. on Nov. 14 in the private dining rooms of Benedum Commons at Bethany College.

Visual and Performing Arts
If you look closely in Pennsylvania’s David Freed for attorney general attack ad on Kathleen Kane, you can see Luke Hardt, chair of the visual and performing arts department and director of Bethany College Theatre, handing out bribe money in a smoky room.

Communications and Media Arts
M. E. Yancosek Gamble, chair of communications and media arts department and advisor to the Bethany College Public Relations Student Society of America Chapter, attended the joint PRSSA/ Public Relations Society of America Conference on Oct. 12-17 in San Francisco, Calif. with students Shannon Marks, Jr., president of Bethany College PRSSA Chapter, and Emily King, Jr., vice president. They listened to Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter, Tim Westergren, founder and CSO for Pandora Radio, Timothy Jordan, senior developer advocate for Google and many other presentations.  

Religious Studies
On Oct. 13, Dr. Brooke Deal, Thomas W. Phillips chair of religious studies and associate professor of religious studies, participated in a panel for Buffalo Seminary in cooperation with the Christian Church of West Virginia titled "Speaking Truth to Power: Prophetic Discourse in a Divided Electorate." This panel discussion also included the Rev. Scott Thayer,  Bethany Memorial Church (and others) and was moderated by Dr. Larry Grimes, professor of English emeritus, dean of Buffalo Seminary and director of church relations. This discussion was located at National City Christian Church in Washington, D.C.

Social Work
Katherine Shelek-Furbee, chair and professor of social work, presented a continuing education workshop entitled “Assisted Living Facilities: A Residential Option for the Older Adult” on Oct. 22 at Elmhurst House of Friendship in Wheeling, W.Va. The audience included social workers from local hospitals and nursing homes. Jamie Crow, executive director of Elmhurst, served as co-presenter and host of the event. Crow also serves as a field instructor for the social work program, where Carlie Fisher, a junior social work major, is currently completing an internship.

Service Learning Center Participates in Relay for Life
The Service Learning Center’s Treasure Hunt for Relay for Life produced five baskets for the fundraiser. Two teams participated in the event, Kathy Shelek-Furbee’s first-year seminar and members from Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. Team members for the seminar included Georgia Miller, Jolyn Ullom, Stephanie Ross, and Ameila Parks. Team members for APO included Jesse Riggs, Julie Brady, and Mari Kolanko. The gift basket auction raised over $500 for the Relay.

Wyman ’64 Receives Cornell Runestad Award
Dr. William Wyman ’64 recently received the Cornell Runestad Award as a part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Nebraska Choral Directors Association. The award is given for life-long dedication to choral excellence.

Wyman is only the ninth recipient of the award, and follows his Fulbright Scholar Award in Korea, Nebraska Choral Director’s Association Choral Director of the Year, Nebraska Music Educators Association Hall of Fame election, the City of Lincoln Mayor’s Award for Arts Leadership and Bethany College’s Alumni Achievement Award.

Wyman is currently professor of music and director of choral activities at Nebraska Wesleyan University, where he has taught for 38 years. His choirs have appeared on eight American Choral Director’s Association national and regional convention programs and most recently appeared in February at the 2012 North Central convention in Madison, Wis. In addition to the convention performance, his choir appeared last year with the Munich Symphony Orchestra, with Phillippe Entremont conducting, the Omaha Symphony Orchestra and at Carnegie Hall with the New England Symphony. His wife Tamara is a professor of piano at Nebraska Wesleyan, and they have a daughter named Rylie who is a member of the Nebraska Wesleyan University Choir.

Publishing Concepts, Inc (PCI), the company printing the new 2012 Alumni Directory, has informed the College that the directory will now be shipped out to alumni in mid-November.  The Alumni Office sincerely apologizes in the delay, but does not have any control over the change in the delivery date.  Any issues with orders can be handled by calling the customer service line at 1-800-982-1590.  Thank you to all of those alumni that participated in the 2012 Alumni Directory.

Bethany Goes to Thiel Saturday for Final Road Game
The Bethany College football team will go out on the road for the final time in 2012, as the Bison journey to Greenville, Pa., Saturday to take on Thiel in a 1 p.m. match-up.

Bethany Takes Down 2nd Place Waynesburg 2-0
Late goals in each half and a sterling defensive effort propelled the Bethany College women’s soccer team to a 2-0 upset victory Wednesday over visiting Waynesburg, who entered the match tied for second in the PAC standings.

Second Half Rally Lifts Waynesburg to 4-2 Win over Bison
The Bethany College men’s soccer team held a 2-1 lead at halftime, but Waynesburg scored three times in under 13 minutes midway through the second half to rally for a 4-2 triumph over the Bison Wednesday at Hoag Field.

Bethany Opens Swimming Season at Pitt-Bradford Relays
The Bethany College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams began the new season Saturday by taking sixth place at the Pitt-Bradford Relays.
