International Wealth Management Leader Robert McCann to Address Bethany College Fall Convocation
Bethany College graduate Robert McCann, Chief Executive Officer of UBS Wealth Management Americas and Member of the Group Executive Board UBS AG, will give the address at Bethany’s Fall Convocation ceremony on Thursday, September 9. The event, an annual tradition at the 170-year-old College, will begin at 11 a.m. in historic Commencement Hall in Old Main.

Invisible Children Returns to Bethany College for Face-to-Face Tour
Bethany College will again host Invisible Children — an organization founded to help better the lives of war-affected children in Africa — as part of the group’s 2010 Face-to-Face Tour. The event, free and open to the public, will be held on September 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Commencement Hall.

College to Hold Dedication Ceremony for Lynn Frantz Adkins Plaza
The Bethany community is invited to attend the dedication ceremony for the Lynn Frantz Adkins Plaza this Saturday, September 4, at 5 p.m., between Cramblet Hall and Phillips Hall. Dr. Adkins was the director of the Teacher Preparation Program and Social Work and Education and, notably, served as the founding faculty member for the College’s social work program. From 1978 until 2007 she taught courses in women’s studies, sociology and social work and served as dean of academic services and professor of education and social work. 

View Bethany Athletic Games Live via Webcast
The Bethany Broadcasting Network will kick off its coverage of a selection of Bethany College athletics games with the football home opener on September 4 at 1:30 p.m., when the Bethany Bison will take on the Allegheny College Gators at Bison Stadium. The first game of the season can be seen live by clicking on client.stretchinternet.com/client/bethanywv.portal# and then selecting the “Click Here to Watch” link. Also posted is a schedule of upcoming events set to be video webcast.

Women’s Volleyball Raises Funds for Breast Cancer Research with Dig Pink Night
The women’s volleyball team is hosting the first annual Dig Pink Volleyball Match to raise funds and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. The Dig Pink night will be held on September 28 and will feature a tri-match between Chatham University and Penn State Fayette. The match schedule includes Bethany vs. Chatham at 4 p.m. and Chatham vs. Penn State Fayette at 6 p.m. The Dig Pink match will be Bethany vs. Penn State Fayette at 8 p.m. Bethany women’s volleyball is excited to be a part of the Side-Out Foundation and Dig Pink campaign. The community is invited to show its support by attending the match and wearing pink. Leadership Conference to Focus on Strengthening Greek Community
Bethany College’s Office of Student Life, Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council (IFC) hosted a Greek Leadership Conference for current officers and rising leaders within the chapters and advisors in spring 2007 and fall 2008. The events stressed Greek relations as well as building and enhancing leadership among the Greek community. The tradition will continue when the Office of Student Life, Panhellenic Council and IFC host a Greek Leadership Conference on September 10-11 at Mountainside Conference Center. This conference will feature sessions on recruitment and Greek leadership, as well as moving the Greek community in a positive direction.

Community Mourns Passing of Wilbur Cramblet
Longtime Bethanian Wilbur “Wib” H. Cramblet Jr. passed away on August 31, 2010, in Marliere Care Center, New Port Ritchie, Fla. Cramblet, born on October 19, 1920, was raised in Bethany and graduated from the College in 1942. An economics major and history minor, he was active in a variety of campus groups, including cross country, theatre and Sigma Nu. Later a fighter pilot in World War II and a plant manager at Weirton Steel Company, he completed advanced academic work in industrial engineering at Ohio State University.

He and his family have maintained close ties with Bethany College throughout several generations. Wilbur served on the Alumni Council and received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1976. Wilbur’s father Dr. Wilbur Haverfield Cramblet served as a Bethany College president from 1934-1952. His grandfather Thomas Ellsworth Cramblet was also named president, serving from 1902-1919.

Wilbur’s wife Jeanne, to whom he was married for more than 60 years, preceded him in death on September 10, 2007. Several of their six children also attended Bethany.

Despite Kidney Failure, Former Bethany Student Completes Third Triathlon
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently featured the story of Brad Davern, former Bethany College student and basketball player who, during his sophomore year in 2001, discovered he was suffering from complete kidney failure. Though he has undergone two kidney transplants and is awaiting a third, Davern has completed three triathlons and states he is determined to make the best of his situation. He also continues to raise thousands of dollars for charity and hopes to one day complete an ironman race, a 140-mile-long triathlon. Bethany Accepting Reservations for Homecoming Tailgate Tent Space
The Office of Alumni & Parent Relations is now accepting reservations for tailgate tent space to be utilized during the Homecoming football game on Saturday, October 2. The cost for a 10 x 10 area is $20. Due to limited space each group will be restricted to one tent only. Bethany Celebrating the 10th Annual Allison’s Run
In conjunction with Homecoming 2010, the 10th Annual Allison’s Run, a conversational and recreational run or walk, will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, October 2, beginning at the Cunningham Soccer Complex located at the intersection of Route 67 and Castleman’s Run Road. The cost is $20. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Those wishing to pre-register should contact the Office of Alumni & Parent Relations at (304) 829-7411 or alumni@bethanywv.edu. The first 75 registrants will be given a complimentary t-shirt. Help us to remember the vibrant life of Jim Allison ’64 while raising money to support the scholarship that bears his name.

Bison Baseball Alumni, Save the Date!
Attention Bison Baseball Alumni! Save the date and join us for the annual Alumni Baseball Game slated for Saturday, September 11, at Bethany Park. The game will begin at noon with batting practice at 10 a.m. In the first contest, the alumni team will play versus the varsity team for nine innings. Alumni will then be "drafted" for another 9-inning intra-squad game. In addition to a meet-and-greet with current players, a picnic dinner will follow when play concludes.

Bethany Online Alumni Community
The Office of Alumni & Parent Relations recently launched Bethany Live. The Web-based community will allow you to keep up with alumni news, create a profile, post class notes and photos, participate in discussions via the message board and communicate with your classmates in a very similar manner to that of Facebook.

To log in for the first time, visit www.live.bethanywv.edu. Click on "first-time login" at the top of the page on in the green bar. Enter your name and your constituent ID when prompted and you'll be on your way. The system will walk you through each step to create a profile, upload photos, edit personal information, etc.

Bison Open Season With 2-0 Shutout Over Pitt-Greensburg
Junior Cassie Spalding (Claysville, Pa./McGuffey) scored her first goal of the season in the opening half and a penalty kick in the second half secured a 2-0 triumph for the Bethany College women’s soccer team Wednesday night in their season opener under the lights against Pitt-Greensburg.

Last-Minute Goal Propels Bethany to 1-0 Season-Opening Win
Senior Justin Wilkinson (Follansbee, W.Va./Brooke) scored on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box with only 1:51 left in the match to give the Bethany College men’s soccer team a 1-0 triumph over visiting Frostburg State Wednesday in the season opener for both teams.

Bethany Loses Opening Match to Waynesburg
Despite two wins from sophomore Maria Vallone (Rochester, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and freshman Sonja Wille (Sinsheim, Germany/Wilhelmi-Gymnasium), the Bethany College women’s tennis team came up on the short end of a 6-3 decision to Waynesburg Wednesday in the first match of the season.

Bison Open Season Saturday by Hosting Allegheny
The 2010 season gets underway for the Bethany College football team Saturday when they host Allegheny in a 1:30 kickoff at Bison Stadium, as BC will try to win their home opener for the fifth time in the last six years.
