Bethany College Announces 2010 Homecoming Court
Bethany College has announced 12 nominees for the 2010 Homecoming Court. Bethany's Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned during halftime festivities at Saturday's football game against Waynesburg University. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Bison Stadium.

Bethany College Announces Fall 2010 Homecoming Festivities
A full schedule of Homecoming Weekend activities for alumni and students has been set for October 1-3 at Bethany College, the oldest College in West Virginia. This year’s events will include a homecoming parade, a variety of alumni and sporting events, an art show and more.

Bethany to Enshrine Four New Members Into Athletic Hall of Fame
As part of its annual Homecoming festivities Oct. 1-2, the Bethany College athletic department will enshrine four new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame.

College Hosts Graduate School Fair
Bethany hosted a Graduate School Fair for students in Commencement Hall on Wednesday. More than 30 graduate schools participated. The event drew approximately 40 percent of the senior class, as well as a number of professors from a variety of departments. The Fair was organized by the Office of Career Services.

Bethany College Society for Collegiate Journalists Holds Induction Ceremony
Nine new members were inducted into the Society for Collegiate Journalists (SCJ)  at Christman Manor at Pendleton Heights on September 26.  They were Elizabeth Casey, Jennifer Fleahman, Caroline Hoag, Jeremy Niziol, April O’Brien, Jon O’Grady,  Lauren Petrovich, Robert Rovnanik and Nicole Salopek. In order to join SCJ, students must have completed three requirements as approved by the Communications and Media Arts faculty:  3.00 in Comm. 201 Media Writing, 3.00 overall in the major and completion of their Tower Communications Media Experience. The recent inductees join current SCJ members Marcie Zampini, President; Eileen Campbell, Vice President; Annie Wilson, Treasurer; and Chelsea Rommes, Secretary. The advisor, President Scott D. Miller, and Assistant Advisor, Dr. Mort Gamble, presided over the ceremony. Both have been involved in SCJ  for more than 30 years, as Gamble was Miller’s SCJ advisor in college in the late 1970s.

Library
Heather Ricciuti, The Mary Cutlip Director of Libraries and Learning Resources, attended the Appalachian College Association (ACA) Fall Library Director’s Meeting on September 16-17 at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Va. Library directors representing 33 of the ACA libraries engaged in a number of topics ranging from the Digital Library of Appalachia and collection development to the 2010 ACA Summit and other professional development opportunities.

Performing Arts
Pandel Collaros, Assistant Professor of Music, performed at Muggswigz Tea & Coffee Co. in Canton, Ohio, on September 18. His special guest was alumna Amanda McCoy, bandleader and bassist for nationally known country singer/songwriter Kevin Skinner.

Physical Education
The Integrated Health and Physical Education class is once again teaching the health and physical education curriculum to the students at St. John the Evangelist School in Wellsburg.  This service project provides twenty-five minute classes, which are taught M-W-F in each of the content areas.

Bethany College students provide 64 lessons over the course of the semester as they work cooperatively as members of three-person teams to plan, instruct and assess student progress. Barry Christmas, Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Head Women’s Soccer Coach, and Wally Neel, Professor of Physical Education, provide supervision and assessment of the students as part of the state-required early field experience.

Psychology
Recently, John Hull, Professor of Psychology, and Debra Hull, Professor of Psychology at Wheeling Jesuit University, presented a series of lecture/discussions titled “Rural Health Care in Appalachia: A case Study” to graduate students in the school of Social Work at Smith College, Northampton, Mass. The presentations were based in part on their experiences as EMTs in the Bethany Volunteer Fire Department and dealt with the challenges and rewards that are part of providing both emergency and nonemergency health care in a rural environment.

George Washington University News Features Buergenthal ’57
Judge Thomas Buergenthal '57, who for more than a decade has served as the American judge on the United Nations’ International Court of Justice, The Hague, and is one of the world's leading authorities on international law and human rights, was featured by a George Washington University (GW) news publication recently in honor of his return to teaching at the institution. Judge Buergenthal is the author of “A Lucky Child: A Memoir of Surviving Auschwitz as a Young Boy,” a memoir detailing his experiences in Nazi concentration camps before immigrating to the United States. The book has been translated into more than 10 languages. He will serve as GW Law School’s Lobingier Professor of Comparative Law and Jurisprudence and will teach international law.

Homecoming to Feature Softball Celebrations
Attention Bethany Softball Alumni! Dust off your softball gloves and join Coach Jan Forsty on Homecoming Weekend at the annual Alumni Softball Game slated for 11 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 3, at the Softball Field. A picnic lunch will follow play. Also that weekend, new Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Shelly Cooper ‘95 and 10 other alumni softball team members who are in the Hall of Fame will be honored. They include Eileen Reading '83, Lisa Redolphy Siegel '84, Sally Dorwart coach, Melanie Stumm West '93, J. Cady Montgomery Rowe '83, Lori Woods '93, Michelle Berwinkle Nogales '85, Lori Schimmel '94, Peggy Fillinger '86 and Amy Stefan Bergin '99.

Bethany Celebrating the 10th Annual Allison’s Run
In conjunction with Homecoming 2010, the 10th Annual Allison’s Run, a conversational and recreational run or walk, will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, October 2, beginning at the Cunningham Soccer Complex located at the intersection of Route 67 and Castleman’s Run Road. The cost is $20. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Those wishing to pre-register should contact the Office of Alumni & Parent Relations at (304) 829-7411 or alumni@bethanywv.edu. Bethany Online Alumni Community
The Office of Alumni & Parent Relations recently launched Bethany Live. The Web-based community will allow you to keep up with alumni news, create a profile, post class notes and photos, participate in discussions via the message board and communicate with your classmates in a very similar manner to that of Facebook.

To log in for the first time, visit www.live.bethanywv.edu. Click on "first-time login" at the top of the page on in the green bar. Enter your name and your constituent ID when prompted and you'll be on your way. The system will walk you through each step to create a profile, upload photos, edit personal information, etc.

Bison Score Two More Wins to Improve to 14-2
The Bethany College volleyball team hosted a tri-match Tuesday, first sweeping past Chatham 3-0 in a PAC match before taking out Penn State-Fayette 3-0, which moved their records to 14-2 overall and 4-1 in the PAC.

Bethany Hosts PAC Leader Waynesburg for Homecoming
The Bethany College football team (1-3, 0-1) will try to hand Waynesburg (2-1, 2-0) its first PAC loss of the season Saturday when the Yellow Jackets come to Bison Stadium for a 2 p.m. Homecoming kickoff.

Lindenfelser Nets Hat Trick in Bethany Win Over Muskingum
Sparked by sophomore Julie Lindenfelser’s (South Park, Pa.) first career hat trick, the Bethany College women’s soccer team recorded a 7-3 win over visiting Muskingum Wednesday.

Bethany Golfers Complete Fall PAC Invitational
The Bethany College men’s golf team wrapped up play at the 2010 Fall Men’s PAC Invitational Tuesday by finishing in seventh place.

Bethany's Coleman Recognized by PAC
The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) has selected Bethany junior Patrick Coleman (South Park, Pa./South Park) as the Men’s Soccer Defensive/Goalkeeper of the Week for Sept. 27.
