Bethany College Welcomes New Students for 2011-2012 Academic Year
Bethany College marked the start of the 2011-2012 academic year with a formal Matriculation Convocation on August 20. Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of the College, was joined by faculty and staff in the ceremony that made Bethany’s total enrollment of 1,020 the largest since 1976-77.
Student Activities Council Launches Fall Semester Activities
The Student Activities Council kicked off the semester with Bison Welcome Week, hosting events for students that began August 21 and will last through August 27. On Sunday, Casino Night was held with more than 200 students in attendance. Faculty, staff and student leaders worked as casino dealers. The Involvement Fair was hosted on August 23 on the Wellness Center lawn. Forty-five student clubs, fraternities, sororities and academic departments made displays and talked to new and returning students about joining. The Student Activities Council gave away Photo Dry Erase Boards to students in the cafeteria on Wednesday. Students could download their favorite image or photo off the internet and print it on a dry erase board to hang in their room. Thursday, Comedy Central and NBC Stand Up for Diversity comedian Sheng Wang delivered laughs to students in Wailes Theatre. Friday, students will celebrate the end of their first week of classes with a Foam Dance Party outside of Morlan Hall.
To wrap up a successful Bison Welcome Week, the Student Activities Council will be hosting American rapper Chingy at Bison Stadium. Chingy hit songs include Right Thur, Holidae Inn and Fly Like Me.
Founder’s Day to Feature Speaker D. Duane Cummins
Bethany College will celebrate 172 years as a small college of national distinction with its annual Founder’s Day Thursday, March 1. Festivities will include the traditional Founder’s Day Convocation at 11 a.m. in historic Commencement Hall and will feature guest speaker D. Duane Cummins, president emeritus of the College and professor of American history.
Founder’s Day at Bethany College is observed on the first Thursday of March. The College received its official charter from the Legislature of Virginia on March 2, 1840. The charter was affirmed on June 20, 1863 by the Legislature of the newly formed state of West Virginia.

The Bethany College Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is accepting applications NOW for the new plate. We must secure a minimum of 250 applications within the next few months to ensure that the plate is produced.
