Alpha Xi Delta Supports Autism Speaks
Since 2009, the Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity has been in partnership with Autism Speaks. This year, the fraternity proudly announced that they have reached a milestone of $1 million in total donations. The Bethany College Delta Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta is honored to have played a role in this achievement.

In the fall of 2012, the Delta Chapter began what they hope will become tradition for their charity fundraising. On Sept. 2, the sisters attended the Washington Wild Things’ Fan Appreciation baseball game at Falconi Field. Here, they were given the opportunity to set up a booth at the gate and collect donations, while spreading awareness for Autism Speaks. Sister Amanda Neilsen threw the first pitch following the announcement of the group’s cause. With the support of 20 tickets purchased by Bethany College’s Office of Student Life and the donations of the Wild Things fans, the Delta Chapter raised $196.43 for the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization.

On Nov. 9, they were again afforded the chance to service their philanthropic partner by attending the Wheeling Nailers hockey game at the WesBanco Arena. They carried donation buckets, participated in a 50/50 drawing, and arranged for information booths where they interacted with those interested in the charity. In the end, fan response was amazing and they rose over $475 for Autism Speaks.

Thanks to recent legislation, donors aged 70-and-a-half or older are once again eligible to “roll over” up to $100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charitable organizations, such as Bethany College, without having to pay income taxes on the transfer. There are two special provisions:

1) Qualified distributions made by Feb. 1, 2013, may be counted retroactively for the 2012 tax year.
2) A taxpayer who took a distribution from an IRA in December 2012 may make a contribution to a qualified charity before Feb. 1, 2013 and consider this a direct transfer.

If you qualify for an IRA rollover, visit the Bethany College planned-giving website for more information.
