Bethany's Education Department Receives Grant to Help Promote Family Literacy

Bethany College's Education Department was awarded a $4,100 Leaders of Literacy Grant from the Regional Education Service Agencies (RESA 6). This grant will help fund a variety of services to promote family literacy initiatives in West Virginia.

Students and Alumni Shared Networking Night

On Thursday, Sept. 22, the Student Alumni Association and the Alumni Office invited students and Bethany alumni to ASK (Alumni Sharing Knowledge Night) in Renner Art Gallery. Students were able to talk with alumni and learn about their experiences at Bethany and in the real world.

 

PRSSA Members Visited Pittsburgh
Marketing Firm

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, members of Bethany's Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) visited Brunnerworks, an integrated media and marketing firm, in Pittsburgh. Steve Radick, a 2003 Bethany graduate and Vice President and Director of Public Relations and Content Integration at Brunner, gave the students a tour of the firm and talked to them about how public relations has modernized over the years.

Theatre Department Set to Perform Short Comic Play

Bethany's Theatre Department will present a short comic play, "The Spot," by Steven Dietz. Performances are on Sept. 23-24 at 6 p.m., and Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. The play will take place in the Bethany Amphitheater behind Steinman Hall. This short (15 minute) comic play is a behind the scenes look at the making of a political TV commercial. In the event of rain, the play will take place in Wailes Theatre.

Mountain State T's of West Virginia Came to Bethany

During Sept. 18-22, 19 couples from the Mountain State T's of West Virginia (Chapter of the Model T Ford Club International) stayed at the Gresham Inn in Bethany. During their stay, they visited private collections of other Model T couples, as well as at Snyders collectibles for parts and other attractions in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The Model T collectors travel approximately 100-120 miles per day at about 30 miles per hour.

Bethanians Participated in 200-Mile Race

On Sept. 16 and 17, four Bethany alumni participated in a 200-mile ultramarathon starting near the town of Cumberland, Maryland, traveling to Washington, D.C. Totaling 36 hours, the Bethanians formed a 6-person Ultra Team and conquered the "Ragner Relay" with half the team members. Normally, a team of 12 is formed to complete this grueling race. Each person on this team ran the length of a marathon (26+ miles each).

Bethany Alumna Honored With Emerita Status

Elizabeth "Betsy" Flanagan, a 1974 Bethany graduate and retired Vice President of Development and University Relations at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of Vice President Emerita by the Virginia Tech Board of Directors. In 2000, Flanagan became an employee at Virginia Tech and outlined an aggressive fundraising campaign to raise $1 billion.

Throughout her career, she has been honored with the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education's Crystal Apple Award for Teaching Excellence and is the recipient of Distinguished Alumni from the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education. In 2015, she received Bethany's Alumni Achievement Award, which recognizes Bethany alumni for achievements and contributions in their profession.

Twelfth Annual Hugh "Tiger" Joyce Golf Outing

The Bethany Athletic Department is proud to host the 12th Annual Hugh “Tiger” Joyce Golf Outing on Friday, Oct. 7, at Highland Springs Golf Course. The event kicks off Homecoming Weekend and is a great chance for all Bethanians to enjoy a day of golf and fun to support the Green & White Club, which is the athletic department booster club that helps provide additional support for Bethany's 22 varsity sports programs. Registration for the Tiger Joyce Golf Outing will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 7, and shotgun start begins at 8:30 a.m.

Bethany Names Woodley New Sports Information Director

Bethany College and Athletic Director Brian Rose have recently named Andrew Woodley the college’s new Sports Information Director.

Football Duo Recognized by ECAC

Bethany College quarterback Chase Kinemond (Shadyside, Ohio/Shadyside) and freshman running back Raekwon Wright (Baltimore, Md./Patterson) received honors from the East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) for their performances this past week in the 57-47 loss to Thiel.

Bison Sweep Saint Vincent 3-0 in PAC Match

The Bethany volleyball team swept Saint Vincent 3-0 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match on Wednesday.

Lehnert Highlights Bison in the Saint Vincent Invitational

The Bethany College men's and women's cross country teams participated in the Saint Vincent Invitational on Saturday. The men finished 13th with an average time of 31:43 while the women finished the 6k course in 16th with an average time of 31:08.

Bethany Men's Soccer Cruises to 6-2 Victory Over UPG

The Bethany men's soccer team defeated Pitt-Greensburg 6-2 on Wednesday in a night game played at Greater Latrobe High School.

Bethany Women's Soccer Falls to Hiram 3-0

The Bethany women's soccer team dropped a non-conference game to Hiram 3-0 on Tuesday.

Bethany Tennis Unable to Overcome Early Deficit

The Bethany tennis team dropped a Presidents' Athletic Conference match with Waynesburg 6-3 on Tuesday.

Several Bison Break Records in 57-47 Shootout Loss to Thiel

The Bethany football team was defeated by Thiel in a 57-47 shootout on Saturday. The game saw over 1,000 yards of combined total offense with several Bison breaking single-game College records.
