Bethany to Brighten the Holidays with Annual Celebration
Bethany College will light hold its third annual Light Up Night and Charity Christmas Tree Auction Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in Commencement Hall. The evening begins with the official lighting of the tree, and includes a charity tree auction, a choir performance and a variety of holiday presentations.



 

Alpha Xi Delta ‘Bands Together’
On Friday, Nov. 15, the sisters of Alpha Xi Delta participated in National Philanthropy Day by hosting a “Band Together for Autism Speaks” initiative. The Delta chapter set up tables in several locations on campus throughout the day and was successful in handing out informational cards about the cause while selling blue Autism Speaks wristbands for $1. In total, the sisters were able to raise more than $150 for their national charity.

 

 

Club Members, Bethanians Celebrate Mexican Revolution
The Spanish Club sponsored the fourth annual celebration commemorating the 103rd anniversary of the Mexican Revolution Wednesday, Nov. 20, in the Bethany Town Community Center.  This wonderful cultural and community-wide event was organized and led by Spanish Club President Dakota Maravelis, together with club members and Club Advisor Dr. Joseph Lovano.  Authentic, home-made Mexican-style food, drink, and music were provided and enjoyed by Bethany College students, staff and faculty members.


Chartwells Holds Annual All-Campus Thanksgiving

Bethany students, faculty and staff had the opportunity to reserve seats for Chartwells’ annual Thanksgiving dinner. Attendees were offered the choice of one of three settings, and many dressed formally for the occasion.

Additional Wireless Access Points Added
Over the last several weeks the information technology staff added additional wireless access points on campus.  Campbell Village increased from eight access points to twenty eight and an additional access point was added to the Ogden Dining Hall.  In the coming weeks, four additional access points will be added to Hummel Field House.  Earlier this year the College implemented upgrades that increased bandwidth to 100mbs.

 

 

Bethany Students Visit News Studio
Fourteen Bethany Communications and Media Arts students visited the offices and studios of WTRF-TV in Wheeling Monday, Nov. 18 with Prof. Pat Sutherland. News Director Brenda Danehart was a gracious host, bringing in two news anchors and the station's sports director to interact with Bethanians, and allowing the group to sit in on the station's 5 p.m. newscast.

Humanities
Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Fujiko Sawtarie and Professors of World Languages and Cultures, Dr. Harald Menz, Dr. Joseph Lovano and Nobuyuki Tanaka participated in the excellent FACDIS 33rd Annual Workshops in International Studies Nov. 14-15.  The event was titled “Immigration and Migration:  Cultural, Social, and Economic Impacts” and was held at the Lakeview Resort and Conference Center in Morgantown, W.Va.  The workshops focused on the following four sessions: “Immigration and Immigrant Incorporation in East Asia,” moderated by Session Chair Prof. Sawtarie, and attended by Prof. Tanaka; “International Migration in North America and the Caribbean,” attended by Dr. Lovano; “A Global Perspective on Migration and Citizenship,” attended by Dr. Menz, Bethany College’s Institutional Representative to FACDIS; and “Africans in the International Migration System.”  FACDIS is the West Virginia Consortium for Faculty and Course Development in International Studies.

Humanities
Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Dr. Holly Hillgardner’s essay "Spirited Transformations: Pneumatology as a Resource for Comparative Theology" is included in the recently published volume "Divine Multiplicity: Trinity, Diversities and the Nature of Relation" and is published by Fordham University, New York.  A preview is available here.

Dr. Hillgardner also presented a session entitled "Yoga and Meditation for Self Care" at the recent Social Work Symposium at Bethany College.


Alumnus Earns Assistant Dean Title at Duquesne
Jason Broadwater ’03 has been named the assistant dean of Duquesne University's McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts. Broadwater has held many roles in higher education, including serving as student services coordinator at West Virginia University’s journalism school, and most recently as director of student and enrollment services at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.

During his time at Bethany, Broadwater was involved in the school’s radio station, WVBC, as well as its newspaper, The Tower. Broadwater says some of the skills he learned at Bethany helped prepare him for his new career. For the complete story, click here.

BCVB Captures Fourth-Straight ECAC Crown
For the fourth-consecutive season, the Bethany College volleyball team has captured an Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship, winning the ECAC Southwest Regional crown by defeating McDaniel College in the semifinal round, and Marymount University in the championship final on Saturday.

Women’s Swimming And Diving Win At Davis and Elkins/Men Fall
The Bethany College women’s swimming and diving team squeaked out a 121-113 victory Davis and Elkins College on Saturday afternoon, while the Bethany College men’s swimming and diving team fell 202-50.

Joyce Leads Balanced Attack in Bison’s 79-61 Win Over Mount Union
In a total team effort, the Bethany College men’s basketball program (2-0) defeated The University of Mount Union, 79-61, on Tuesday evening in the Hummel Field House. The Bison led wire-to-wire in the contest, getting double-digit points from all five starters.

Mouch/Addy Named SAAC Athletes of the Week
Sophomore women’s volleyball libero Julia Mouch (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) and men’s basketball senior forward Leslie Addy, (Columbia, Md./St. Vincent Palotti) have been named the Bethany College Student Athlete Advisory Committee’s Players of the Week announced the Bethany SAAC on Tuesday.

Blinn/Despagne Highlight 10 All-PAC Football Selections
First-Team All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference selections for Bethany College sophomore wide receiver Eric Blinn (Beaver, Pa./Western Beaver) and junior defensive back Wyssmy Despagne (Riverdale, Md./Parkdale) highlighted 10 All-PAC awards for the Bison football program.

Men’s Cross Country Finishes 2013 Campaign At Mideast Regional
The Bethany men’s cross country team finished in 46th out of 54 teams at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Mideast Regionals which was on the campus of Lehigh University and hosted by Muhlenberg College.

Women’s Basketball Falls In Season Opener At Marietta
The Bethany College women’s basketball team had three players score in double-figures but it would fall 97-56 in the season opener at Marietta on Tuesday evening.
