Bethany Student Service Fellows Connect Classrooms and Community
Service Learning Center Announces 2012-2013 Appointees
 
The Service Learning Center at Bethany College announces the appointment of students Annie Grogan and Bethany Mullins as 2012-2013 Service Fellows. Grogan and Mullins will help lead a variety of service learning initiatives designed to bridge classrooms and community through meaningful interaction with the needs of the region.

World Languages and Cultures Inducts Honorary Society Members & “Do Deutsch” Initiative Recipients
The World Languages and Cultures Section (Department of Humanities) held their 3rd annual Honors Induction Ceremony on Tuesday, May 1 at 7:00 (PM) in Morlan Lounge.  Harald Menz and Joseph Lovano, Professors of World Languages and Cultures, presided at the ceremony.

Valerie Flatley, Catherine Papp, and Hannah Sweetser received certificates for their industrious work here on campus this past Fall Semester 2011 with the “Do Deutsch” Initiative, sponsored by the German Embassy in Washington, DC.

The following students were inducted as new members in the Kappa Xi Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi (the Spanish National Honorary Society):  Jacky Marcus, Nicolette Rea, Chelsea Sebetich, Renee Shepherd, and Alexander Stubbs.  Current Kappa Xi Chapter Sigma Delta Pi Members, Meghan Philp and Francis Ríos, were also in attendance and participated in the ceremony.

After the Induction Ceremony, attendees enjoyed home-made, authentic German and Spanish/Hispanic cultural refreshments.

Gamble Speaks at Brooke County Public Library
Circus historian Dr. Mort Gamble, assistant to the president, was the featured speaker at the April 26 annual open house and meeting of the Friends of the Brooke County Public Library in Wellsburg.

His topic was “The Circus in American Popular Culture.”

Gamble is a frequent contributor to circus publications, and was employed by a 3-ring show in the 1970’s.

Professor Emeritus of Psychology Shares His Autobiography
T. Gale Thompson, professor emeritus of psychology and a Columbia, Mo. resident shared some highlights of his interesting life with the Missourian.

Former WVU Coach Speaks at SAAC Banquet
The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted its annual end of the year banquet Sunday, April 29th, and the keynote speaker was former West Virginia University head football coach Bill Stewart. The Banquet, held at Benedum Commons, featured a buffet dinner and awards presented by the athletic department’s SAAC recognizing the accomplishments and honors earned by Bethany student-athletes over the last year.

History and Political Science
Assistant Professor Marc Sable, of the History and Political Science Department, attended the annual meetings of the New York State Political Science Association, on April 21-22, and the New England Political Science Association, on April 28-29.  At the New York meeting Dr. Sable was chair and discussant on the panel "Reconstituting Modern Republicanism" and at both conferences he presented a portion of a chapter of his book-in-progress on Lincoln and Aristotle's theory of virtue.  The paper was entitled "Beauty, Greatness and Justice: Reconciling Aristotle with Democracy and Lincoln."  He argued that Lincoln illustrates a kind of magnanimity especially fitted to friendship in democracy.

In order to further his study of Aristotle, Dr. Sable will be studying Classical Greek at the University of Arizona during the month of June.  Dr. Sable's studies will be supported through a Bethany College Faculty Development Grant.

Visual and Performing Arts

Social Work
Katherine Shelek-Furbee, Chair and Professor of Social Work
, was a co-presenter at the WV-NASW spring continuing education conference in Charleston on Friday, April 27. The title of the session was Dual Relationships and Boundary Issues in Social Work. The workshop covered issues in working with social work clients that result when the worker and client develop relationships outside the helping role, such as friend, church member, or community participant. The session was part of a three-day training symposium, which takes place each spring.

Melanee W. Sinclair, Associate Professor of Social Work and Coordinator of Field Placements, was also a co-presenter at the WV-NASW spring continuing education conference in Charleston. Her presentation, entitled Employment Law: A Primer, provided a basic understanding of what supervisors and program directors need to understand in order to minimize liability in supervision and employment.

Tim Stack ‘75, President and CEO Piedmont Healthcare in Atlanta participated in a three person panel that addressed the challenges their organizations face during a series of “Future of Health Care in Georgia” forums held across the state.

Through Bethany College’s partnership with the Online Consortium of Independent Colleges and Universities, affordable online courses during the summer are available for students and alumni thru Bethany College. Each course with OCICU costs just $725 and registration for the course is directly through Bethany College.

After throwing his first collegiate shutout last week, Bethany College freshman Ryan Meier (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Pitcher of the Week for April 30.

PAC Names Bethany's Conwell Pitcher of the Week
Following a big week in which she allowed just one run in two complete game victories, Bethany College freshman Kiersten Conwell (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) was picked as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Pitcher of the Week for April 30th.

Bethany Keeps PAC Hopes Alive with Westminster Sweep
Behind two superb pitching effort from junior Ryan Styche (Buena Vista, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) and freshman Ryan Meier (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward), the Bethany College baseball team kept its PAC Tournament hopes alive by sweeping Westminster Sunday 3-2 and 3-0.

Bethany Season Ends With Split at Westminster
The 2012 season came to a close Sunday for the Bethany College softball team with a split at Westminster, as the Bison won game one 11-5 before falling 6-3 in the nightcap.

Bethany's Prato Wins 100 to Highlight PAC Track Championships
Sophomore Paige Prato (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) won the conference title in the 100 to highlight a solid day for the Bethany College track and field teams at the 2012 PAC Championships, which concluded Saturday at Geneva.

Bison Football Golf Classic
Bethany Football will host its annual Bison Football Golf Classic on Saturday, May 5th  at the Highland Springs Golf Course in Wellsburg. Donation to play in the outing is $100 which includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, food and drinks on the course, and the post outing social at The Bison Inn. Young alumni (classes of 2008-2012) can play for a discounted price of $60. If you can join us and play, or would like to be involved as a sponsor of the outing, please contact Tim Weaver at tweaver@bethanywv.edu. All proceeds go to benefit the Bethany Football program. We hope to see you there.
