Janeshek to Give Poetry Reading at Bethany College
Jessie Janeshek, a 2003 graduate of Bethany College, will present a poetry reading at the College on April 11 at 7:30 p.m. The event will be held in the Academic Parlour, located in Bethany’s historic Old Main.

Bethany College Theatre Presents ‘night, Mother’
Bethany College Theatre will present “‘night, Mother” by Marsha Norman on April 9-10 at 8 p.m. in Wailes Theatre. An open dress rehearsal on April 8 at 8 p.m. will be followed by a talkback session addressing the issue of suicide, the play’s central theme. Veronica Reynolds, College Counselor, will host the discussion.

President Miller Addresses Weirton Rotary Club

President Miller was the featured speaker Wednesday at the Weirton, W.Va., Rotary Club.  Miller spoke of the importance of residential liberal colleges and the national reputation of Bethany College.

Executive Vice President & General Counsel Bill Kiefer (a Weirton resident) and Vice President for Institutional Advancement Sven de Jong also attended the meeting. 

Speak OUT! Day Raises Funds for Haiti
Bethany’s World Languages and Culture program hosted Speak OUT! Day on April 1. The event took place from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. in front of Old Main and included uninterrupted readings and performances in languages other than English. This year’s participants were asked to find sponsors for their performances in order to raise funds for Haiti Earthquake Relief.  All proceeds will be made available to Bethany's ongoing Haiti relief effort.

Bethany College Wins Educational Advertising Award
Higher Education Marketing Report has announced that Bethany College won a Merit Award in the group’s 25th Annual Educational Advertising Awards. The award recognizes Bethany’s admissions publication “Why Bethany” in the competition’s Brochure category. The 2010 award marks the fifth Bethany has received in recent years from Higher Education Marketing honoring the College’s publications.

The Educational Advertising Awards is the largest educational advertising awards competition in the country. This year more than two thousand entries were received from more than one thousand colleges, universities and secondary schools from all 50 states and several foreign countries. Judges consisted of a national panel of higher education marketers, advertising creative directors, marketing and advertising professionals and the editorial board of Higher Education Marketing Report.


Greeks Attend Nailers Hockey Game
Bethany College Greek men and women attended the Wheeling Nailers Hockey game on March 26 at the WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, W.Va. Close to 50 fraternity men and women enjoyed the night out, which was sponsored by Coca-Cola and coordinated through Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council. Joining the students were staff members Michelle Rejonis '94, Director of Alumni and Parent Relations; Elizabeth de Jong '91, Dean of Students; Sven de Jong '95, Vice President for Institutional Advancement; and alumni Joyce and Mark Chernenko, '78.


Bethany Hosts Summer 2010 Camps
Bethany College has a busy summer schedule with educational, sports, band and retreats planned for most of the summer.

Governor’s Honors Academy
Bethany College will host the 2010 West Virginia Governor’s Honors Academy June 26 – July 18, 2010. On campus for the three-week residential program will be 180 rising high school seniors taking intensive and broad-based classes and participating in a daily seminar session, educational events and interactive activities. This will be the final year of a three-year grant award program funded by the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts for Bethany College.

Basketball Camp
Bethany College’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Andrew Sachs, will continue his summer camp director career by offering three basketball camp dates.

Girls High School Team Camp: June 18-20
Boys High School Team Camp: June 25-27
Boys and Girls Individual Development Camp: June 28-July 2
Co-Ed Ages 7-17, Overnight Residential and Commuters

Bethany College will host three major sport camps over the summer.

Pro Soccer Camps and DPSoccer Academy are pleased to announce the Bolton Wanderers International Player ID Camp. Bolton Wanderers Football Club, of the English Premiership, will be running the week-long residential and commuter camp open to players age 8-18. This Elite Player ID Camp running July 18-22 will provide Bolton’s International Academy Staff with the opportunity to access the technical, tactical and overall fitness levels of North American players. The Universal Dance Association will host an instructional dance camp for high school and all-star teams at Bethany College August 8-10. Education Dept. Offers Summer Autism Course
The Bethany College Department of Education will offer two 600-level courses in autism as part of an intensive, month-long summer program. The two courses, when combined with an existing certification in behavior disorders or multi-categorical special education, will result in an endorsement in autism. Appropriately licensed persons successfully completing the two courses in autism will be recommended for endorsement by their county system. The two courses will be held at the Bethany College Hurl Education Center June 21-July 16. For more information and for an application, click here.

Mathematics and Computer Science
Fujiko Sawtarie, Professor of Computer Science, attended the ACM Technical Symposium on Computer Science Education in Milwaukee, Wis., March 11-13. She participated in two workshops, "Teaching Smartphone Application Development" and "Using Networking Examples for Labs and Enrichment in Introductory Courses." She was a part of a study group to explore new technologies and on-going issues.

Physical Education and Sports Studies
Three Physical Education Club members accompanied Kosmas Mouratidis, Coordinator for Physical Education and Sports Studies and Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Sports Studies, and Wally Neel, Professor of Physical Education and Sports Studies, to the annual American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Conference in Indianapolis, Ind., March 17-20. Senior Dan Gigler, junior Jason Soltis and freshman Alex Tylka used their spring break to engage in this outstanding professional development experience. Bethany students have attended the conference for 10 of the past 11 years.

Ciszewski ’77 Named  Executive Vice President of Sales for Ilitch Holdings

John Ciszewski, a 1977 Bethany College graduate, was recently named executive vice president of sales by Tom Wilson, president and CEO of sports and entertainment properties across Ilitch Holdings companies. Ilitch Holdings, Inc. provides professional services to companies owned by Michael and/or Marian Ilitch and includes groups such as the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers and Olympia Entertainment. Ciszewski’s objective will be strengthening the relationship between the companies and fans, season-ticket holders and suite owners.

Ciszewski and his wife, Denise, have five daughters. In addition to his degree from Bethany, Ciszewski earned a master's degree in sports administration from Ohio University.  

IRD Haiti Benefit and Raffle
As part of Bethany College's "Hands to Haiti" partnership with IRD, we invite you to attend a fundraising event sponsored by IRD. Bethany College Alumni Council Seeks New Members
Would you like to give back to your Alma Mater? Volunteering as a member of the Bethany College Alumni Council is a great way to do just that, and the Council is seeking new members. The Alumni Council is comprised of alumni who are elected to govern the activities of the Alumni Association. In addition to attending two meetings on campus annually and assisting with Homecoming and Alumni Weekend, council members are assigned to a standing committee with various objectives.

Attention PSI Beta's - 150th Anniversary Celebration -- Update
The PSI Chapter of the Beta Theta PI Fraternity will be celebrating its 150 year anniversary as a chapter at Bethany College. Events are being planned and will be held on the Bethany College Campus June 18-20, 2010.

The full agenda, along with daily activity alternatives and a listing of housing alternatives, is now available at www.psibeta.net/150. There will be golf on Friday, a cookout on Friday night, a full agenda of activities on Saturday (including activities for spouses/significant others) and a dinner on Saturday evening. Sunday will feature a brunch. Rooms will be available on campus.

Bethany Online Alumni Community
The Office of Alumni & Parent Relations recently launched Bethany Live. The Web-based community will allow you to keep up with alumni news, create a profile, post class notes and photos, participate in discussions via the message board and communicate with your classmates in a very similar manner to that of Facebook.

To log in for the first time, visit www.live.bethanywv.edu. Click on "first-time login" at the top of the page on in the green bar. Enter your name and your constituent ID when prompted and you'll be on your way. The system will walk you through each step to create a profile, upload photos, edit personal information, etc.

If you do not yet have a Constituent ID number or you have problems logging in, contact bethanylive@bethanywv.edu.

Strong Pitching Leads Bison Sweep Over Allegheny for Forsty's 500th Win
Behind complete game pitching efforts from freshman Emily Jump (Milford, Del./Polytech) in the opener and junior Cortney Newland (Carmichaels, Pa.) in the nightcap, the Bethany College softball team swept a home doubleheader from Allegheny Thursday by scores of 5-1 and 6-1.

Bison Falter After Doubles, Lose to Marietta 5-4
Although they were able to build a 2-1 lead following doubles play, the Bethany College men’s tennis team couldn’t hold the advantage and dropped a 5-4 decision to visiting Marietta Wednesday afternoon.

Bethany Opens PAC Play with Split at Thiel
The Bethany College baseball team opened PAC play Tuesday by splitting a twinbill at Thiel, as they nipped the Tomcats 5-4 in the opener before being shutout in the nightcap 5-0, which snapped a five-game Bison winning streak.

Bethany Football Program to Hold Bison Golf Classic
The Bethany Football Program will hold its annual Bison Golf Classic on May 1 at Highland Springs Golf Course in Wellsburg, W.Va. The cost for the event is $100 and includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, food and drinks on the course, and a post-outing social at Bubba’s Bison Inn. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. The outing will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. We hope to see as many football alums as possible at this year’s outing.
