Bethany College Announces Speaker for MLK Day
Dr. John Mattox, curator and founder of the Underground Railroad Museum in Flushing, Ohio, has been as announced as the speaker for Bethany College’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Jan. 20.

President Miller Leads Liberal Arts Presentation at Presidents Institute
Bethany College President Dr. Scott D. Miller recently led a session on the career focus of liberal arts colleges at the Council of Independent Colleges’ Presidents Institute at Marco Island, Fla.


Bethany Students, Faculty Visit Italy
Professor Kenn Morgan's latest J-Term class, The Art of Italy, is currently studying in Rome. Morgan took this picture of his class earlier this week inside the Colosseum.

They also attended the Epiphany Mass at St. Peter's Basilica and were blessed by Pope Francis. Wednesday was spent at the Vatican Museum, and throughout the rest of the week, the group traveled to Orvieto, Florence, Padua and Venice to study more Italian art and architecture before returning to campus.


Journalist, Political Candidate Speaking at Bethany
Ed Rabel, an Emmy Award-winning news correspondent who has worked for CBS and NBC, will appear as a guest speaker for the J-Term class "How Can I Make Things Better?" on Jan 14. Rabel, who is currently running for U.S. Congress, will be speaking on the topic "American Government and Social Justice." The class meets at 9 a.m. in the lower fellowship hall of Bethany Memorial Church. All are welcome to attend. Any questions can be forwarded to the class instructor, Scott Thayer, at 304-829-7139.

Bethany President active at CIC Presidents Institute
President Miller was active at the CIC Presidents Institute at Marco Island, Florida, last week.  The meeting is the largest annual gathering of college and universities. Approximately 400 CEOs attended the meeting.

For 13 years, he has served as Chair of the CIC New Presidents Program.  He also chaired the Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors of the Colleges and Universities of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  

Dr. Miller also led a session on the value of liberal arts colleges (see link to story above).  The final night he was a part of a special recognition at the Awards Banquet for Ann Die Hasselmo, retiring President of the American Academic Leadership Institute.  She is also former President of Academic Search, Inc., and Hendrix College.  Dr. Miller is the Chair of the Academic Search, Inc., Board of Directors and Vice Chair of the AALI Board.  He is pictured (right) with Dr. Hasselmo  along with Dr. Tom Kepple (former president of Juniata College), new president of ALLI, and Dr. Nils Hasselmo, Ann's husband and former president of the University of Minnesota.



President Miller is Chair of The Colleges and Universities of the Christian Church (TCUCC), an organization which represents the 14 member institutions of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Nominations Sought for President’s Awards
Bethany President Scott D. Miller is again seeking nominations from all campus constituencies for the President’s Awards for Excellence in Performance. One will be awarded to a member of the faculty and another to a member of the staff. Recipients will be announced during the annual Honors Day Convocation. Nominations should be sent directly to the President at Office of the President, Bethany College, Old Main, Bethany, WV 26032.

 


Bethany Accepting Nominations for Alumnus of the Year Award
The Alumnus of the Year Award was established by the Office of the President to recognize outstanding loyalty and accomplishment by alumni of Bethany College. The award recognizes not one achievement, but is reserved for those who have attained and maintained excellence throughout their career and in their service to others. Nominations should be sent to Office of the President, Bethany College, Old Main, Bethany, WV 26032.

Criteria/selection:

1. Must hold a degree from Bethany College.
2. Must demonstrate outstanding professional accomplishment and personal deeds on behalf of Bethany College.
3. Nominations may come from all constituency groups of the College.
4. Nominations should be made in the form of a formal letter detailing the strengths of the nominee.
5. The Director of Alumni and Parent Relations & President's Cabinet will serve as the screening committee for the award.
6. The President of the College will choose the recipient.

Bethany Alumni Association Now Accepting Nominations for Alumni Awards
The Bethany College Alumni Association is now accepting nominations for the annual Alumni Awards. Award recipients are selected by the Internal Affairs Committee of Alumni Council from nomination forms submitted by alumni and friends of Bethany. Recipients will be honored at a banquet during Alumni Weekend festivities slated for May 2-May 4. Alumnus Bob McCann Praised in “Forbes” for Transformational Leadership
Bob McCann '80 was recently featured in a Forbes article, "Tale of Two Bankers: Bob McCann, Sergio Ermotti Are Reinventing Wall Street." "When McCann arrived at UBS in 2009 as CEO of Wealth Management Americas, UBS was bleeding advisors and assets," the article says. However, McCann faced the company's problems head-on, making phone calls to brokers himself. He is now the CEO of UBS Group Americas. Read the entire article here.

Bison Men's Basketball Rolls Over Westminster
The Bethany College men’s basketball team (11-2, 5-0 PAC) returned to the friendly confines of Hummel Field House in style as the Bison cruised to a 96-56 victory over Westminster College on Wednesday.

Bison Come Up Short Against Westminster
The Bethany College women’s basketball team (3-9, 2-3 PAC) dropped a 69-63 decision to conference foe Westminster College on Wednesday evening.

Swimming & Diving Teams Fall to W&J
The Bethany College swimming & diving teams came up short against Presidents’ Athletic Conference opponent Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday. The women dropped a 147-177 decision, while the men were defeated 146-103.

Gabrielle Naples/Kevin Jackson Earn SAAC Athletes Of The Week
The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that women’s basketball sophomore Gabrielle Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range) and men’s basketball senior Kevin Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) have been named the SAAC Athletes of the Week.
