Shepherd Appointed Director of Master of Arts in Teaching Program
Bethany College Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Darin E. Fields announces that Edward Shepherd, assistant professor of education, has been appointed the new director of the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program.

Bethany Mourns Passing of Trustee Emeritus John McLaughlin '53
The Bethany College community is saddened to learn of the passing of Trustee Emeritus John McLaughlin '53. John served for several years on the Alumni Council, including serving as its President and later as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1998-2006.

He received the Bethany College Alumni Achievement Award in 1993.  John had a long and distinguished career with PPG Industries.  He cared deeply for Alma Mater, his fraternity Phi Kappa Tau, and he served both loyally. 

A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, January 7, at 2 p.m. at North Hills Christian Church in Ross Township, Pa. 

Holiday Schedule Announced
Bethany College's administrative offices will close for the holiday break at the close of business on Thursday, Dec. 22. Offices will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 8 a.m.

Available to Bethany College alumni, employees, students, family members and friends, the Bethany plate is a custom-designed, special-issue offering for all Class A motor vehicles currently licensed in West Virginia.

The Bethany College Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is accepting applications NOW for the new plate. We must secure a minimum of 250 applications within the next few months to ensure that the plate is produced.

One Class A vehicle currently registered in West Virginia qualifies for one plate at a cost of $70 per plate. If you have more than one vehicle, order as many as you need!

The School of Education at Bethany College is hosting an accreditation visit by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) on April 15-17, 2012. Interested parties are invited to submit third-party comments to the visiting team. Please note that comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the party’s relationship to the institution, i.e. graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates.

Linn ’84 Appointed Office Managing Shareholder for Littler Mendelson
Nick Linn ’84 will serve as the Littler Mendelson, P.C. (Littler) office managing shareholder in the organization’s new Morgantown, W.Va., office. Littler is the nation’s largest employment and labor law firm representing management. The Morgantown office is the group’s first in West Virginia.

Linn earned his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and his B.A. from Bethany College in 1984. He is admitted to practice in West Virginia, the District of Columbia, Texas and Ohio.

Verakis ‘94 Part of Winning Team in Facebook Studio Live Competition to Help End Hunger
Daniel Verakis, Cramer-Krasselt senior vice president and director of public relations for its Chicago office, participated in a Facebook Studio Live and Feeding America competition to raise awareness of hunger.

Feeding America is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief charity. Cramer-Krasselt is the second-largest independent marketing and communications agency in the U.S.

Bethany Accepting Nominations for Alumnus of the Year Award
The Alumnus of the Year Award was established by the Office of the President to recognize outstanding loyalty and accomplishment by alumni of Bethany College. The award recognizes not one achievement, but is reserved for those who have attained and maintained excellence throughout their career and in their service to others.


  1. Must hold a degree from Bethany College.
  2. Must demonstrate outstanding professional accomplishment and personal deeds on behalf of Bethany College.
  3. Nominations may come from all constituency groups of the College.  Nominations should be sent to:

  1. Nominations should be made in the form of a formal letter detailing the strengths of the nominee.
  2. The Director of Alumni and Parent Relations & President's Cabinet will serve as the screening committee for the award.
  3. The President of the College will choose the recipient.

Three Bison Voted Volleyball Academic All-Americans
Following the most successful season on the court in school history, three Bethany College volleyball players were also recognized for their abilities in the classroom by earning Capital One Academic All-American honors, which were announced Tuesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Bethany's James Earns All-Region Honors for Second Straight Year
Bethany College sophomore forward Arkangelo James (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Great Lakes Region Third Team Tuesday, his second consecutive All-Region honor.

Bethany's Wilcox Earns PAC Player of the Week
Bethany College junior Nick Wilcox (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) has been named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Bison to a pair of victories last week.

Bison Get Defensive to Claim 68-46 Victory
Leading by only two at halftime, the Bethany College men’s basketball team turned to its defense, which forced 19 Olivet turnovers and limited the Comets to 25 percent shooting in the second half, as the Bison pulled away for a 68-46 road victory Thursday night.

Bethany Comeback Nets 73-66 Victory Over Mount Aloysius
After a sluggish first half put the Bethany College women’s basketball in a 10-point halftime deficit, the Bison rallied in the second half to pull out a 73-66 victory over visiting Mount Aloysius Thursday night.

PAC Announces Addition of Two Football Affiliate Members
The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) has formally announced the addition of Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University and Case Western Reserve (Ohio) University as football affiliate members, starting in the 2014-15 academic year.
