Alumni News
Stottlemyer ‘62 Develops Safe, Affordable Water System for Latin American Communities
Bethany alumnus Fred Stottlemyer ‘62 is furthering a long record of overseas volunteer service by helping to ensure healthier living conditions in Honduran communities. Stottlemyer signed up for the Peace Corps for two years shortly after graduating from Bethany College in 1962 and worked in East Pakistan. He went on to establish a career with the South Putnam Public Service District. Formerly a board president of the International Rural Water Association, Stottlemyer began devoting much of his time to volunteer work in Latin America after he retired five years ago. Through the use of a water purifier he developed with the help of an engineer, his ingenuity and service have helped provide rural Central American communities with clean, safe water. He also helped found Aqua y Desarrollo Comunitario (Community Water and Development), a non-governmental organization that assists communities lacking dependable access to safe water.
