Bethany Community Honors Webb
Sarah Webb, Pastor of Bethany Memorial Church and Chaplain of Bethany College, was the guest of honor at a luncheon in the private dining room at Benedum Commons following the morning worship service on Sunday, May 4. Webb recently announced that she was leaving Bethany, sparking the community and congregation to join forces in appreciation for her years of service.

President Miller and Dr. Patrick Sutherland were among a number of guests who came bearing gifts, presenting Rev. Webb with a Bethany College chair. The luncheon began with a procession of children from the church who placed lilacs in a glass vase from Oglebay that had been purchased for Rev. Webb by the congregation. ADOC (Active Disciples On Campus) gave her a flower arrangement and thanked her for her work with them. Rev. Webb also received a painting of the Bethany Memorial Church by Amy Van Horn, a framed poem by Judy Van Horn and a cash gift from the church.

Robert Myers, Moderator of the Church Board, offered remarks about the church’s lovely stained glass windows which bear the names of such historic Disciples as Alexander and Thomas Campbell, Barton W. Stone, W.R. Pendleton, Robert Richardson, W.H. Woolery, T.E. Cramblet, Dwight Stevenson and Cloyd Goodnight. Myers then delivered the luncheon’s crowning moment by announcing that one of the church’s stained glass windows will be restored and that Rev. Webb’s name will be added to the window.

More Than 200 Women Attend Nicholson Breakfast
The 62nd annual Darline Nicholson Spring Breakfast, formerly the May Morning Breakfast, drew quite an impressive crowd to Benedum Commons on Saturday, May 3. More than 200 Bethany women, including students, parents, faculty, staff and residents enjoyed a pleasant breakfast in honor of this year’s senior women. The event is sponsored by the Division of Campus Life and the Bethany College Panhellenic Council.

Angela Bado ’77 returned to campus as the featured speaker and enlightened the graduating seniors with her message of “Going With Your Strengths.” Illustrating her theme by sharing portions of her own life story, Ms. Bado’s message of building on the areas in which one excels and going forth with confidence was an encouragement to all women at the event.

The women of Bethany College were especially pleased that Darline Nicholson, long-time advisor to the Panhellenic Council and Renner Union Activities Board, was able to attend this year’s event. The Darline Nicholson Spring Breakfast was renamed in her honor in 2000.

Bethany Football Hosts Bison Golf Classic
Bethany’s football program held the 2008 Bison Golf Classic on Saturday, May 3 at Highland Springs golf course in Wellsburg. A record 106 golfers played in the outing. The group included over 60 alumni of the College along with friends of the program, corporate partners, and the coaching staff. Golf began with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. A buffet dinner, raffle, and awards presentations at Bubba’s Bison Inn in Bethany followed the outing at 3:00 p.m.

The foursome of Kerry McCann, Henry Johnston, John Clingan and Al Ciocca, all of whom played football at Bethany, won the tournament with a score of 14 under par. The winners generously donated their cash prize of $400 back to the program.
In addition to the golfers themselves, support for the outing came from over forty different individuals and businesses who contributed either financially or by donating goods ranging from raffle prizes to food and beverages.

WKKX radio in Wheeling broadcast its Saturday Sports Huddle show live from the outing. Hosts John Blackmore and Jerry Ames spent time on the air with head football coach Tim Weaver, newly hired men’s basketball coach Mike Summey and Bethany President Dr. Scott Miller.

Proceeds from the outing go to benefit the Bethany Football Program.

Department of Social Work Holds Honors Dinner
The Bethany College Department of Social Work held its fourth annual Honors Dinner last Friday in Harder Hall at the Mountainside Conference Center. Highlighting the event was President Scott D. Miller’s dedication of a picture showing the first graduates of the Social Work program from the Class of 1981. Dr. Miller dedicated the picture in honor of Dr. Lynn F. Adkins, Professor of Education and Social Work Emeritus, who was the founder of Bethany’s Social Work program.

Numerous current students received awards for their efforts during the 2007-08 school year and Michael Weaver of Fox Run Hospital was honored as Field Instructor of the Year. Weaver was a member of the inaugural Class of 1981.

More than 60 people, including family members and friends of the honored students, attended the event with Chartwell’s catering staff providing the meal. Jennifer Naylor, President of the Social Awareness Club, and Patrick O’Brien, Social Work Senior Fellow, served on the planning committee along with department faculty.

Bethany Soccer Alumni Celebrate Milestones
The Bethany Alumni Soccer Association (BASA) celebrated 40 years of men’s soccer and 20 years of women’s soccer in fine style as more than 130 Bison soccer alums returned to campus May 2-4 for the annual BASA Soccer Weekend at the Cunningham Soccer Complex.

Festivities opened with a golf tournament at Highland Springs Golf Course. Individual winners included Rich Greenfield, Richie Siconolfi, Tim Fieldhouse and Kara Williams McKenzie. The second day featured the 7v7 soccer tournament with eight teams competing in the Under-40 or Over-40 brackets. Tournament MVP Dave Farmer led the Rust team to victory in the Under-40 Division with co-captains Gunther Schuhmann and Shawn Thompson carrying the Sky Blue team to victory in the Over-40 Division.

The weekend’s highlight was the Star of Honor Reception held at Renner Union to honor those individuals who have made significant contributions to Bethany soccer. This year’s honorees included Derek and Christine Thompson, Dave Farmer, Shawn Thompson, Graham Ramsay, Paul McGuckin, Dave Weibe, Rod Hines and the 1982 NCAA Division III runnerup squad. The reception also hosted the signing of the charter for the David "Fuzzy" Williams Endowment Fund. This fund, honoring one of the founders of Bethany soccer, will be used to endow the program.

Members of BASA will be back on campus Oct. 11 for ceremonies honoring the College’s inaugural soccer team from 1968. Those festivities will be held in conjunction with the 2008 soccer team’s home game against Thiel College. Soccer alums should mark their calendars for the next BASA Soccer Weekend, scheduled for May 1-3, 2009.
