BETHANY, W.Va. – Five Bethany College student groups witnessed cultural immersion and professional experience first hand as they traveled the world during Spring Break, March 7-11.

Three members of the Religion and Philosophy Club traveled to Amsterdam and the Netherlands over Spring Break to explore the cultural and religious treasures found in the country.

“Highlights of the trip include the Old Church, the “Our Lord in the Attic” secret church, the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh museum and the Jewish museum,” said Dr. Holly Hillgardner, trip advisor and Assistant Professor of Religious Studies.

Nine students from the Student Activities Council traveled to Petersfield, Jamaica, for an alternative Spring Break trip. These students worked in two different elementary schools where they served as teacher assistants. There, they helped tutor the local children in concepts such as addition, multiplication and spelling.

The group also visited local Jamaican spots such as the “Roaring River,” which is a clear river that runs through a cave, and they participated in a cooking lesson, a reggae music night and a class on how to speak the local language, Patwah.

“The trip was an amazing experience that allowed our Bethany College students to not only explore another culture, but allowed Bethany College to make an impact on the world much greater than ourselves,” said Samuel Goodge, Director of Student Activities.

Three clubs, the Business & Accounting Club, the Economics Club and the Spanish Club, spent Spring Break in London, England. The groups, comprised of eleven students, traveled with advisors Dr. Anju Ramjee, Professor of Business and Finance and Dr. Joseph Lovano, Professor of World Language and Cultures.

“Students visited the London Stock Exchange (LSE) and learned about the workings of the LSE and its many subsidiaries including the Milan Stock Exchange, as well as their electronic platforms,” said Ramjee. “Students also visited various sites around London including Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, the London Eye, Westminster Abbey and St. Paul’s Cathedral.”

“As one student mentioned, ‘this was the first time I have traveled outside the U.S. and I just loved everything I got to do and see,’” she added.

Three members of the Pre-Health Club spent Spring Break in the country by traveling to the 41st Biennial Convention for the Alpha Epsilon Delta Honor Society, which is the Health Pre-professional Honor Society in Houston, Texas.

Bethany’s Chapter, which is the West Virginia Delta Chapter, was awarded second place for activities for small chapters in Region 3.

“This award recognizes the accomplishments of the Chapter over the last two years, which includes organizing blood drives, arranging for speakers in various health professions, holding mock standardized exams and other service projects,” said trip advisor Dr. Lisa Reilly, Associate Professor of Chemistry.

Five students in Bethany’s Chapter of the American Chemical Society traveled to Atlanta, Ga. for the annual Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy. One of the students attended the conference as a representative of an external summer research program, presenting research in an undergraduate poster presentation.

“In today’s ever-changing scientific landscape, it is vital for students to be exposed to high-level scientific presentations, journal articles and posters while also learning to interact professionally with those trained in the field,” said trip advisor Dr. Scott Brothers, Assistant Professor of Chemistry. “Bethany students are fortunate to have the opportunity to attend professional conferences and to travel to new locations.”

“Travel and professional experience are cornerstones of well-rounded college students,” he added.
