Feb. 16 - GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Bethany College swimming and diving teams opened the 2012 PAC Championships/James Longnecker Invitational Thursday at Grove City College.

The Bison women scored 43 points and are sixth among PAC schools and eighth out of 11 teams at the Invitational. A short-handed Bethany men’s team did not score on the opening day of the meet.

In the initial event, the BC 200 Free Relay team of freshman Marina Baker (Winchester, Va./Sherando), junior Melissa Davis (Lancaster, Ohio), freshman Becky Martin (Somerset, Pa./Martin Christian Home School) and freshman Kathryn Foulke (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) improved one spot from the preliminaries to take 10th in the finals with a time of 1:53.46.

In the 500 Freestyle, senior Sara Reass (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) made a run at a long-time school record. She posted a time of 5:32.95 in the preliminaries, which was a little more than a second away from the Bethany record of 5:31.60 set by Mary E. Scollins in 1974. Reass would take seventh in the consolation final and 15th overall in the event by touching in 5:33.25 in the final race.

After scoring in the relay, Baker turned in a strong time in the 200 Individual Medley. She earned a spot in the consolation final and then posted a time of 2:23.21to take 14th overall.

The final event of the first day was the 400 Medley Relay and Bethany had its highest placement so far. The foursome of Reass, Baker, Davis and Martin placed seventh in the morning prelims to earn a position in the championship heat. In that race, they recorded a time of 4:35.45 to finish seventh overall.

The championships continue Friday and will conclude Saturday evening.
