BETHANY, W.Va. – Love was in the air at Bethany College, but not the type traditionally associated with Valentine’s Day.

Love Your MajorOn Tuesday, Feb. 11, the college hosted its second Love Your Major event, which invites first-year students to meet with faculty from all the departments, ask questions about program requirements, and formally declare their majors and minors ahead of registering for their sophomore year.

Fifty-five students declared their fields of study during Love Your Major. Physical education was the most popular declaration, Registrar Lisa Cucarese said. The others were spread among psychology, communications, and physical sciences.

“The Valentine’s theme and refreshments help to make the event celebratory and fun,” said Katherine Shelek-Furbee, assistant provost and chair and director of social work. “Both years we have had 30-40 percent of the first-year class stop by to sign up. … Several of the departments also used the event to highlight activities going on during this year that students in the major can be involved in.”

Though the event is designed for first-year students, any student who hasn’t declared a major is invited to take part.
