BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College will host the COVID data manager for the Baltimore City Health Department for a digital convocation lecture titled Bioinformatics: The Swiss Army Tool of Research.

Thomas Butler will speak at 11 a.m. Nov. 9 via Zoom.

Butler joined the Baltimore City Health Department this year. He oversees data tracking of COVID-19 vaccine distribution for the VALUE communities project, an initiative designed to ensure equitable vaccine distribution across the city.

He previously worked as a bioinformatics contractor for the National Institute on Aging, analyzing public and internal cohort genomic data sets.

Butler received his Bachelor of Science in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Michigan, where he also completed a minor in computer science.

He also has a Master of Science in Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He completed a joint international program with the Peace Corps that included serving two years in Peru.

His service included working with women and families with young children regarding nutrition and household hygiene, training a group of youth facilitators on healthy adolescent behavior, and working with the regional health department to carry out and analyze survey data regarding dengue knowledge and practices.
