BETHANY, W.Va. – A Bethany College senior chemistry and mathematics major completed a summer fellowship at the C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry at West Virginia University.

Amanda Reynolds Chemistry FellowshipAmanda Reynolds, of Sistersville, W.Va., spent 10 weeks synthesizing and learning about complex organometallic compounds that exhibit single molecule magnet behavior. Dr. Brian Dolinar, an assistant professor of chemistry at WVU, served as her faculty mentor.

She presented her research during WVU’s Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium.

The fellowship also signaled Reynolds’ acceptance into WVU’s graduate program in chemistry. She will study the same type of molecules during her graduate studies and said she plans to earn her doctorate in about five years.

After she finishes her studies, Reynolds said she plans to teach and continue research in the field.

The summer fellowship is part of the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates program.

While at Bethany, Reynolds has received a research award from the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium, received the Pittsburgh Bethany College Club Outstanding Junior Woman Award, and received the Freshman Chemistry Award.
