BETHANY, W.Va. – Eleven future Bethanians will receive the Kalon Leadership Scholarship, an annual $2,500 award based on leadership, character, service and academic performance.

The Kalon Leadership Scholarship, which is for incoming freshman, is competitive, and candidates are chosen by College faculty and staff through an application process that includes an interview and an essay discussing leadership achievements.

The 2016 Kalon Leadership Scholars include Aiden Albert of Saxonburg, Pennsylvania; Daniel Arndt of Greensburg, Pennsylvania; Joshua Craig of Lisbon, Ohio; Kadin Gould of Huntington, West Virginia; Samuel Lipinski of Fort Myers, Florida; Reed Long of Carmickaels, Pennsylvania; Jordan Moore of Eighty Four, Pennsylvania; Alyssa Rock of Wexford, Pennsylvania; Ashley Urso of Valencia, Pennsylvania; Mollie Williams of New Cumberland, West Virginia; and Brooklyn Wilson of Washington Court House, Ohio.

Aiden Albert, son of Sam and Jodi, is a graduate of Knoch High School. Albert was the leader on the varsity basketball team his junior and senior year. He was also the team leader for the Make-A-Wish project which provided a wish to a local girl in need. He served as an altar server at St. Joseph of Cabot and also was a church volunteer, including working with a variety of jobs for festival set-up, games and clean-up. For three years, he was the camp counselor of Little Dribblers Basketball, where he coached elementary students in basketball and organized tournaments. Albert plans to major in Physical Education at Bethany.

Daniel Arndt, son of Doug and Lisa, is a graduate of Hempfield Area High School. Throughout his high school career, Arndt has been a leader on the track & field team and football team. He has led the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) organization as the acting student Christian athlete. Arndt has volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and has volunteered at local food banks and Coats for the Homeless through a church run organization. Arndt plans to major in Education or Business at Bethany.

Joshua Craig, son of Jason and Kara, is a graduate of Lisbon David Anderson High School. Throughout his high school career, Craig was a leader on the basketball and football team. He participated as an attorney on a mock trial, where he led the case for the prosecution. Craig is a National Honor Society member, where he mentored elementary students in their studies. He also was a varsity team member in the Academic Challenge where he helped and led the younger students to succeed. Craig plans to major in Finance at Bethany.

Kadin Gould, daughter of Andy and Karri Fischer and Matt Gould, is a graduate of St. Joseph Central Catholic High School. Gould was a leader with the Inspire West Virginia organization where she inspired eligible juniors and seniors at her high school to vote. She served as the President of the Catholic Teen Club where she planned events such as youth rallies, camping trips, fundraisers and fellowship activities. In addition, she was the Vice President of her school’s Spirit Club and Vice President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization where she conducted weekly meetings and arranged for various speakers to give addresses. Athletically, she was a leader on the soccer field where she organized team building activities. Gould plans to major in Political Science and minor in English at Bethany.

Samuel Lipinski, son of John and Linda, is a graduate of Potomac Falls High School. Throughout his high school athletic career, Lipinski was a leader on the football and track & field team. He was a member of his school’s Marketing Club, where he was responsible for planning school wide events. In 2014, he had a summer internship at the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece, where he worked in the U.S. Embassy Consular Section maintaining computer records to track visa applications and Americans in Greece seeking assistance in passport help. In addition to his time at Greece, he assisted the Embassy gardening staff with maintaining the Embassy grounds, as well as assisting in the U.S. Embassy Protocol Section where he helped execute U.S. governmental events. He also participated on the Rugby Team while in Greece. Lipinski plans to major in Political Science and History at Bethany.

Reed Long, son of Michael and Nanette, is a graduate of Carmichaels Area High School. He is a National Honor Society member where he did community service with the Rolling Meadows Care Home. He also was involved with the Big Brothers’ Big Sisters’ organization, where he helped his little “brother” with homework. Athletically, he has been a member of Varsity Baseball, Basketball and Football at his high school. He served as the Student Council Vice President and Spanish Club President, as well as the Junior and Senior Standing Committee Member. Long was a percussionist in the Senior High Band, as well as a Senior High Chorus member. He was an alter server at the St. Hughes Roman Catholic Church, and he also volunteered at the St. Mary’s Festival every summer. Long plans to major in Political Science with a minor in History at Bethany.

Jordan Moore, daughter of David and Roxanne, is a graduate of Bentworth High School. She served as the Worthy Advisor for the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls where she raised $12,000. She was the secretary for the Benleyville Leo Club where she collected money for the Salvation Army, as well as other service initiatives. Moore volunteered at the Washington Hospital where she worked in the Gift Shop, Visitor’s Information Desk and the Admissions Desk. She led the planning and coordination as a Youth Leader at Vacation Bible School. Some of her duties included teaching dances to children and helped with the set-up and tear-down at the church. She also was an ambassador for the “Friends of Rachel” organization, as well as volunteering for “Blessing in a Backup.” Moore plans to major in Accounting at Bethany.

Alyssa Rock, daughter of Ira and Michelle, is a graduate of North Allegheny High School. She has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, where she assists with the younger students for belt testing. She is a team rider for the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA), where she has contributed nine years of riding. She assisted physicians with animals at the Wexford Veterinary Hospital, Bradford Hills Veterinary Hospital and the Glade Run Lutheran Services. She was a band member as well as a church volunteer, where she helped with confirmation, Catholic charity work and summer camps. Rock plans to major in Equine Sciences at Bethany.

Ashley Urso, daughter of Jon Urso and Shannon Trunzo, is a graduate of Mars Area High School. She was the secretary of the Class Council at her high school where she planned meetings and came up with ideas to raise money for prom. She was an active member of Key Club, as well as Treasurer of the Interact Club where she led in organizing money, funding and activities. Academically, she was a field and stream mentor for AP biology where she taught children how to take care of their environment and the importance of it. She was also a Guidance Aide tutor where she helped those struggling in classes such as Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Urso also has an entrepreneurial side since she began her own cleaning business after seeing the potential to make money to clean people’s houses. She led her cheerleading squad in cheers and took on the captain’s responsibilities when she was not present. Urso plans to major in the Biology Pre-Med Track at Bethany.

Mollie Williams, daughter of Doug and Bridget, is a graduate of Oak Glen High School. She served as a special education peer mentor, as well as a student trainer. She oversaw that athletes needs were met anywhere from taping injuries to getting water as needed. Williams served as a Youth Soccer Coach and Youth Soccer Referee where she would organize schedules as well as maintaining all requirements for both parties. Athletically, she led her Varsity Soccer Team by organizing warmup routines, and motivated and encouraged her team members. Williams plans to major in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education with PreK-K & K-6 Autism and Reading Endorsements at Bethany.

Brooklyn Wilson, daughter of Mark and Jasine, is a graduate of Washington High School. Wilson was the Class President her senior year and Class Vice President her freshman through junior year at high school. During this time, she helped plan and prepare the school’s prom, as well as designing class t-shirts. As President, she planned the graduation ceremony, as well as the Senior Breakfast. Athletically, she has been a leader on her varsity athletic teams. She served as the Varsity Captain in Volleyball, Softball, Swim Team and Cheerleading. She has been involved with “Rachel’s Challenge,” where she helped members in sharing more positive comments instead of negative ones to make her high school a “bully-free” community. Wilson plans to major in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education at Bethany.
