BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College’s Faculty Friday series was launched in an effort to connect current and prospective students, staff, and alumni with our distinguished faculty members, who are actively involved in the betterment of our students and institution, both inside and outside of the classroom.

We would like to introduce our first spotlight- Associate Professor and Chair of the Biology Department Dr. Anna Edlund! To get to know Dr. Edlund better, read her Q&A below:

Q: What additional positions or involvement do you have at Bethany?

A: Faculty Advisor of Beta Beta Beta Biology Honors Society, Faculty Welfare Committee, and Chair of the Curriculum Committee

Q: What is your education background?

A: Swarthmore College, B.A. in biology with distinction, University of California-Berkeley, Ph.D. in cell and developmental biology, University of Chicago, Postdoctoral Fellow

Q: Why should prospective students pursue a degree in biology?

A: Out of curiosity for the natural world and seeking future engagement with science

Q: Everyone has a reason for doing what they love. Many times, this is referred to as your “why”- some people say their “why” was a calling from childhood, others say their “why” is for fulfilling a greater life purpose. What is your “why” for being a part of Bethany College’s faculty?

A: 1) Learning about living organisms brings me gladness, and 2) teaching about them brings me purpose and new understanding. Also, 3) it means a lot to be part of Bethany’s long history of education and empowerment.

Q: If you had only one word to represent Bethany College and what the College means to you, what would that one word be?

A: History
