BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College students marked Make a Difference Day on Saturday with a service project at the Alexander Campbell Mansion.
More than a dozen students representing Zeta Tau Alpha, Kalon Scholars, and the Disciples of Christ cleared leaves from the grounds and gutters and removed peeling paint from the front steps. Morning rainfall scrapped plans to paint the steps.
McKayla Martin organized the event, and Bethany Memorial Church provided lunch for the volunteers.
The Campbell Mansion was built between 1975 and 1840 and home to at least 20 people, including Bethany College founder Alexander Campbell, in its early days.
The National Park Service added the Campbell Mansion to its National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated the site as a National Historic Landmark in 1994.
Campbell also was one of the principal founders of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Bethany College retains its longstanding ties to the faith.
