BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College Theatre Department will continue its 2019-20 season with a presentation of three one-act plays: “What Happens Behind the Bar…” by Nick Zagone; “Phone Arts” by L. B. Hamilton; and “Disney in Deutschland” by John J. Powers.

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Nov. 14, 15, and 16, and 2 p.m. Nov. 17 in Wailes Theatre, located in Steinman Hall on the Bethany College campus.

“What Happens Behind the Bar…,” directed by student Jordan Moore (of Washington, Pa.) tells the story of four Texans following a dust-up inside the bar. “Phone Arts,” directed by student Kerry Kerr (of Lawrenceville, Ga.) in which a same-sex couple conflict over one’s job as a phone sex operator.

“Disney in Deutschland,” directed by Bethany College Director of Theatre Luke Hardt, is a speculation on a true incident: In 1935, Adolf Hitler hosted Walt Disney in his vacation home, Berghof.

It’s a well-rounded set of plays, Hardt said. In the “What Happened Behind the Bar…,” Keith Hardt (of Bethany), plays Sam who, with his buddy, Ray (alumnus Rich Oliver of Weirton) have just exited the bar to relieve themselves. They are soon joined by pregnant Carrie (Wesley Crockett of Rusk, Texas) and barfing Pattie (Trinity Dixon of Bowe, Md.).

This is followed by another short comedy, “Phone Arts,” which takes an introspective look on intersectional relations between a same-sex couple. Jane (Yasmeene Henderson of Pittsburgh) struggles to bake, work the telephone, and appease her disapproving partner, Moire (Camila Cuevas of New York).

After an intermission, a longer one-act, “Disney in Deutschland,” imagines the conversation and events of a meeting between Adolf Hitler (Elisha Holder of Bartlesville, Okla.), Walt Disney (Aidan Morgan of West Liberty, Ky.), Leni Riefenstahl (Aubree Gray of Moundsville, W.Va.) and Joseph Goebbels (John Sadar of Dillonvale, Ohio). Wesley Crockett also plays Hitler’s mother and Goebbels’ wife and Kyle Jennings (of Weirton, W.Va.) plays Hitler’s adjutant, Helmut Krauss.

The plays depict some situations that may not be suitable to all viewers. Admission is free or by donation. For more information or reservations, call 304.829.7124.
