Federal and State Grants
Grants and scholarships are often called “gift aid” because it represents financial aid that does not have to be repaid. Grants are often need-based, while scholarships are usually merit-based.
Most grant aid is based on a student’s need for financial aid, so you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) [external link to https://fafsa.ed.gov/] in order to be considered.
Sources of grants include federal, state, private and institutional funds. Because grants never have to be repaid, they are usually limited to the neediest students.
The U.S. Department of Education offers a variety of federal grants, including federal Pell Grants and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants.
