Bethany Alumna Nicole Hawkins ‘02 Named 2026 Principal of the Year

BETHANY, W.Va. (June 10, 2026) — When Bethany College alumna Nicole Hawkins ‘02 reflects on her college experience, she credits Bethany with laying the foundation for a career centered on leadership, collaboration, and student success. 

Recently named the 2026 Principal of the Year for Charles County Public Schools, Md., Hawkins says her time at Bethany shaped both her approach to education and the educator she would become.

“Bethany College played a pivotal role in shaping my pathway into education, providing me with a strong academic and experiential foundation through my dual major in Elementary Education and Special Education,” Hawkins said. “The program offered rich, hands-on learning opportunities, allowing me to gain real-world experience across local campuses in Brooke County, W.Va., which deeply prepared me for the diverse needs of students I would later serve.” 

Hawkins graduated from Bethany with dual certifications in Elementary Education for grades 1–6 and Special Education from infant through adult. She credits the College’s faculty with helping her connect classroom theory to practical application. 

“I was fortunate to learn from exceptional professors who brought both expertise and authenticity to their teaching, helping me bridge theory and practice in meaningful ways,” she said. 

Following graduation, Hawkins began her career as a special education teacher with Charles County Public Schools, later teaching fourth and fifth grade before transitioning into school administration. She currently serves as principal of Arthur Middleton Elementary School, where she has been recognized for cultivating a collaborative school culture and leading innovative initiatives, including the district’s first dual language English-Spanish program.  

Colleagues, staff, students, and families praised Hawkins’ leadership in the district’s announcement, recognizing her as Principal of the Year. The release highlighted her commitment to supporting educators, building relationships, and fostering an inclusive environment where students can thrive.  

Beyond academics, Hawkins says her experience as a member of the Bethany women’s basketball program also left a lasting impact. 

“My experience as a student-athlete on the basketball team under Coach Jina DeRubbo was equally impactful,” Hawkins said. “She not only welcomed me into the Bethany community but embraced me as part of her own family, fostering a sense of belonging and support that extended far beyond the court.” 

Looking back, Hawkins says her Bethany experience continues to influence the way she leads and serves her school community today. 

“I often reflect on my time at Bethany with deep appreciation, knowing I could not have asked for a more enriching and transformative college experience.”
