BETHANY, W.Va. (March 12, 2025) – Bethany College is announcing the formation of a new fly-fishing club and competitive team, open to students of all skill levels who are interested in both the social and competitive aspects of the sport. Launching in fall of 2025, the club aims to bring together a passionate community of anglers who enjoy the tranquility of the waters, while also providing opportunities for those looking to take their skills to the next level in competitive fly-fishing tournaments.

The newly established club will focus on two key areas:

  1.  Social Fly-Fishing Club: Members will engage in regular group outings, fishing trips, and workshops designed to foster a supportive and fun environment for students to learn, practice, and enjoy the sport.
  2.  Competitive Fly-Fishing Team: For those interested in honing their techniques for competitive events, the team will offer resources and coaching to help prepare students for local and regional fly-fishing tournaments.

As part of its commitment to supporting talented young anglers, Bethany College is pleased to announce the launch of a $2,500 annual fly-fishing scholarship for students active on the competitive team. The scholarship will help give students a valuable opportunity to pursue both their education and competitive fly-fishing aspirations.

“The establishment of the fly-fishing club and team align perfectly with our commitment to providing unique extracurricular opportunities for our students,” says Jerry Stebbins, vice president and dean of students. “Fly-fishing fosters patience, perseverance, and an appreciation for nature, and we are thrilled to offer this new outlet for students to connect with nature and one another, develop their skills, support mental health and enhance clean waterways, and compete at the highest level.”

The fly-fishing club and competitive team are open to all students, regardless of their previous experience with the sport. Whether you are an experienced angler or just starting, there is a place for you.
