BETHANY, W.Va. – Award-winning poet, David Daniel, will give a poetry reading on March 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Academic Parlour of Old Main. Sponsored by Bethany’s English program, the reading is free and open to the public.
Daniel’s “Seven-Star Bird” won the Larry Levis Prize for the best first or second book of its year and is available from GrayWolf Press and distributed by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Writing about that book, American literary critic Harold Bloom calls Daniel “an authentic heir of Hart Crane.”
Many of Daniel’s poems from his new manuscript, “Ornaments & Other Assorted Love Songs,” have been featured in “The American Poetry Review,” “Connotation: An Online Artifact” and “Memorius.” His recent essays on both poetry and music have appeared in a number of journals and anthologies.
Not only has Daniel served as poetry editor of the literary magazine Ploughshares for more than a decade, but he is also the founder and producer of WAMFEST: The Words and Music Festival. This organization brings together many of the most celebrated artists in the world including writers, singers, choreographers, visual artists and movie makers. Some of those involved in WAMFEST include Salman Rushdie, Neil Gaiman, Bruce Springsteen, Jonathan Demme, Rosanne Cash, C.D. Wright, Talib Kweli and John Doe.
In 2014, Daniel was awarded a Poetry Fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Currently, Daniel directs the undergraduate creative writing program at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and he serves as part of the core faculty of Bennington College’s Writing Seminars.
