Church bodies at every level are under extraordinary pressure right now. Rev. Dr. Smith argues that what’s happening is not secularization, at least not in the sense of a decline in religious belief and practice. It is rather an individualization that is unraveling associations of every kind, even as it makes possible new expressions of Christian faith. During the Scott Lectures, Rev. Dr. Smith will offer historical and sociological analysis of these dynamics. But most of all, he will offer ways to think about this present moment theologically. In a series of deeply hopeful and practical lectures, he will open space for discerning some brave and faithful ways forward for pastors, lay leaders, theological educators, and seekers of many kinds.
Cost:
In-person: $65 ($30 for Seminarians)
Zoom: $30

Lectures:
“Weird Spiritual Energies: Christian Life between the Times”
“After the Voluntary Society: Congregations between the Times”
“Love in the Ruins: Ministry between the Times”
The Rev. Dr. Ted A. Smith works at the intersections of practical and political theology. At Candler, Smith teaches especially in the areas of preaching and ethics. He also serves as director of Theological Education between the Times, a project that gathers diverse groups of people to think together about the meanings and purposes of theological education..
Smith is the author of three books: “The End of Theological Education” (Eerdmans, 2023), “Weird John Brown” (Stanford, 2015), and “The New Measures” (Cambridge, 2007). Together these books try to think theologically about core American Protestant institutions, practices, values, and rhetoric in a time when they are unraveling. Smith has also edited books on sexuality and ordination, contemporary issues in preaching, and economic inequality, along with a series of books on theological education. He also serves on the editorial boards for “Political Theology, Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics,” and “Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology.”
