Fall 2024 Student Psychology Symposium Explores Acceptance and Change

Bethany, W.Va. (Dec. 16, 2024) — Bethany College hosted its Fall 2024 Student Psychology Symposium, an event that celebrated the pursuit of knowledge and the ongoing dialogue between understanding and growth. Students from psychology, social work, and other disciplines presented their research, showcasing the depth of inquiry happening on campus.

The evening culminated with senior psychology major Lara Ann Smith receiving the symposium’s top award, the Certificate of Outstanding Research, for her project, “Building Success Through Emotional Intelligence: The Psychological Foundations of Team Cohesion and Football Performance.” Her research explored how psychological principles can strengthen teamwork and improve athletic outcomes, reflecting the connection between individual insight and collective success. The award was determined by Bethany President Dr. Jamie Caridi and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Danny Moore.

The event featured keynote speaker Dr. Eric Beeson ‘05, professor and department chair of counseling at Marshall University. Reflecting on his journey from a first-generation college student to an academic leader, Beeson returned to Bethany with a message rooted in the dualities of acceptance and change.

“Bethany has always been a little oasis on the mountaintop,” Beeson shared. “I’m glad to see that the tradition of excellence in the psychology department is still here.”

Drawing from his own experiences, Beeson emphasized the importance of understanding oneself before embarking on any path. “It’s hard to ask others to do things you haven’t done yourself. Whatever direction you choose, know yourself first and recognize the tension between acceptance and change,” he said.

The symposium highlighted the foundational role that research plays in personal and professional development. Beeson praised the students’ efforts, remarking, “The skills you’re developing here are foundational to whatever direction you end up going in.”

Events like the Student Psychology Symposium exemplify Bethany College’s dedication to fostering critical thinking and preparing students for challenges that demand both stability and adaptability.
