BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College departments and organizations are hosting a series of Halloween-themed events leading up to Oct. 31.

The English Department will kick off the events at 5 p.m. Tuesday with a Zoom presentation by alumnus Khristian Smith ’15, who will share tales of witches and werewolves he’s studied while pursuing his Ph.D. in English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Feel Good Friday returns to the Morlan Hall lawn. The Office of Institutional Advancement hosts and will pass out Halloween treats.

At 9:30 p.m. Friday at Tilock Amphitheatre, Adam Fletcher ‘00, professor of mathematics, will revive the Bethany ghost story tradition popularized by Dr. Larry Grimes, professor emeritus of English.

Fletcher leads the Bethany First-Year Experience in history and has extensively researched the stories of ghostly presence on campus and in the town of Bethany collected by former college archivist Jeanne Cobb.

From 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, the Social Work and Equine clubs will host a haunted barn with games and pony rides at the Oglebay Stables. The cost is $10 per child.

At 4 p.m. Saturday, Bethany College and town will host a Halloween and Fall Festival along Main Street.

Education and physical education students will offer games and activities from 4 to 5:30 p.m. A costume contest is 5:30 p.m. Judges from the Student Government Association and the town of Bethany will determine age group winners and award cash prizes. The Bethany Volunteer Fire Department will host a parade after the judging.

Trick or Treat around the town of Bethany will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. During that time, Bethany clubs and Greek organizations will host a Trunk or Treat in the parking lot across from Bethany Memorial Church.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, Travis Straub, associate professor of English, will host an open reading of terror tales, while the STEM Clubs will wrap up Chemistry and Science Week with Spooky S’mores at the Outdoor Classroom. Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite chilling stories and a flashlight.
