Dear Bethany College Students, Faculty, Staff, and Bethany Residents,

We want to inform you that, effective immediately (Feb. 7, 2025), the pedestrian bridge on our campus is closed for maintenance. The duration of this closure is currently unknown, but we will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Safety & Coordination Efforts
The safety of our community is our top priority. We are coordinating this closure with the West Virginia Department of Transportation, local authorities, including the Bethany Police Department and town officials, to ensure proper communication, traffic safety, and alternative pedestrian routes.

What You Need to Know:

  • Cross With Caution – When crossing the main street, please stay alert to oncoming vehicular traffic and follow all pedestrian signals.
  • Be Extra Cautious Near CV Hill and the Rec Center – Pay close attention when using the walkway between CV Hill and the Rec Center, especially near the green Bethany signage that states “Caution, drivers cannot see you!” Always remain vigilant and aware of approaching vehicles.
  • Stay Aware – Be mindful of changing traffic patterns and use extra caution when navigating the area.

Tampering with Closure Barriers is Prohibited
For the safety of everyone, tampering with fencing, signs, or any closure-related items is strictly prohibited. Individuals found interfering with these safety measures will face penalties from law enforcement. Bethany College students involved in such actions will be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with the College’s student conduct policies.

Bethany College’s Approach to Bridge Closure Communication
Bethany College is committed to ensuring clear, transparent, and accessible communication regarding the pedestrian bridge closure. To achieve this, we are implementing industry best practices for infrastructure communication, including:

Timely and Multi-Channel Notifications – Providing updates through email, social media, and campus signage to ensure all community members receive important information.

Collaborative Coordination – Working closely with town officials, campus security, and local law enforcement to maintain public safety, minimize disruptions, and ensure a smooth transition.

We appreciate your cooperation and patience as we work to improve our campus infrastructure. Your safety remains our top priority, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Jerry Stebbins
Vice President for Student Life
