BETHANY, W.Va. –Bethany College has announced a memorial service in honor of its former first lady, Aleece Gresham. Mrs. Gresham passed away on May 1, 2006 at the age of 101.

Family and friends are invited to attend the service, which is to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at the Aleece Gresham Garden in front of Old Main on the Bethany campus. A reception will follow. In case of inclement weather, the service and reception will be in Commencement Hall.

The service will celebrate the life of Mrs. Gresham and her many contributions to the Bethany Community that spanned more than half a century. The Rev. Sarah Webb, College Chaplain, will officiate. Other participants include Bethany President Dr. G. T. “Buck” Smith, Bethany President Emeritus Dr. D. Duane Cummins and the Rev. Dr. William B. Allen, Regional Minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in West Virginia.

Mrs. Gresham was born Alice Mary Fickling in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Oct. 27, 1904. She was preceded in death by Dr. Perry Epler Gresham, her husband of 41 years and long-time President of Bethany College. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Wertz Sandercox and Robert A. Sandercox of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandchildren, Alison Grace Sandercox of Lititz, Pa., Megan Louise Boyer of Union City, Calif., and, R. Philip Sandercox of Newtown, Conn. Also surviving her are eight great-grandchildren, a stepson, Dr. Glen E. Gresham and wife Phyllis, of Sanibel Island, Fla., four Gresham grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was a long-time member of the Bethany Memorial Church (Disciples). Memorial gifts may be sent to Bethany College, Bethany, West Virginia 26032, where an endowment fund in her name is established.
