BETHANY, W.Va. --Bethany College President Dr. Scott D. Miller is one of 22 presidents interviewed and profiled in a new book on presidential leadership.
The book, "The First 120 Days: What a New College President Must Do to Succeed," by Jerold Panas was released in December and is available for purchase from the Institutions Press, Chicago or online at at www.panaslinzy.com. Panas interviews and profiles "experienced higher education leaders past and present" offering advice to new presidents and those aspiring to the position.
Panas is managing parter of Jerold Panas, Linzy & Partners, a firm that is regarded as one of the nation's premier firms in the field of campaign services and financial resource development. Panas has written a number of books on leadership and philanthropy.
Now in his second year at Bethany, Dr. Miller was president of Wesley (DE) College from 1997 to 2007 and Lincoln Memorial (TN) University from 1991-97.
Dr. Miller is now in his third college presidency and is in his 18th year as a higher education CEO. He has been featured in a number of books in recent years. He was one of 17 presidents profiled in a Kauffman Foundation-funded book, ”The Entrepreneurial College President” (American Council on Education/Praeger Series on Higher Education, 2004, pp. 132-133.) Wesley--under his leadership--was featured as one of “four amazing transformational stories” in “The Small College Guide to Financial Health” (NACUBO, 2002), pp. 126, 192-194) and last year was noted in “Born, Not Made: The Entrepreneurial Personality” (Praeger, 2007, p. 133).
For eight years he has chaired the Council of Independent Colleges New Presidents Program. A highly-sought presenter, mentor and author on higher educational topics including financial sustainability and presidential performance for national conferences and trade journals, Dr. Miller is a regular columnist for “College Planning and Management” and “The State Journal.” He is the author of a widely distributed e-newsletter, “The President’s Letter."
For the last four years Dr. Miller and Dr. Marylouise Fennell, senior counsel for the Council of Independent Colleges, have served as co-executive editors of “Presidential Perspectives”, an on-line presidential thought series that has resulted in three books (Aramark Publications, Philadelphia).
