Smith, a 1971 graduate of Bethany College, brings more than five decades of leadership in financial services, nonprofit engagement, and higher education governance to his alma mater.

Smith recently retired after a distinguished 50-year career providing financial planning services and products to the affluent market. His professional journey included serving as an officer of CIGNA (1987–1996) and Wealth Enhancement Group (2017–2021). He also founded and managed Sound Financial Solutions, L.P. from 1996 until its acquisition by Wealth Enhancement Group in 2017. Beyond his professional endeavors, Smith has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to service. His leadership includes terms as president of the Houston Society for Financial Service Professionals, the Houston Business and Estate Planning Council, and the Downtown Rotary Club of Houston. He has also held board roles with organizations such as Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University and CompUDopt, a nonprofit dedicated to bridging the digital divide by providing technology and education to underserved students.

Ken Bado ‘77, chairman of the Bethany College Board of Trustees, shared his enthusiasm for Smith’s appointment, “The appointment of Jay Smith marks an important moment for our institution, and we look forward to the wisdom, dedication, and unique perspectives that Jay will bring to our community.” Smith’s extensive experience in both the corporate and nonprofit sectors, combined with his connection to Bethany College, positions him to contribute meaningfully to the institution’s mission of academic excellence, innovation, and service.

Smith makes his remarks on being appointed to the Board of Trustees, “Over the past several years, I have been very impressed with the tremendous progress that President Caridi, Chairman Bado, the Board, the faculty, and the staff at Bethany have made. I am excited to join the Bethany Board of Trustees and enthusiastic about contributing in some way to continuing the College’s ongoing growth and renewal.” Bethany College extends its warmest congratulations and welcome to Jay Smith as he begins his tenure as trustee.
