BETHANY, W.Va. — Seven Bethany College undergraduates were accepted into the 10-week Oglebay Resort Hospitality Internship program that provides college students with a meaningful experience that compliments their current coursework. Through an experiential and structured approach to learning, interns will gain real-life experience in the hospitality industry.

This internship opportunity includes a job shadowing to provide exposure and learning of many areas of focus at the resort. At the end of the program, participants will also complete a project and present it to their academic department. Each student is receiving college credit for the experience.

The seven students also applied for and received housing scholarships through Bethany College’s Career Center. “Many students might find a summer internship but then struggle to find summer housing in an area. So we worked closely with Oglebay Resort to create a solution for students wanting to stay in the area and gain experience during the summer,” said the Director for Career Services, Amy VanHorn. Together we created a summer internship program and offered a housing scholarship for those who needed assistance.

The scholarship was primarily funded by a fundraising project completed by a Bethany College freshman seminar class that decided to use the money raised to help their fellow Bethanians. So this project not only taught our freshmen about the importance of volunteerism, but they saw first-hand how their effort impacts their campus community and fellow classmates.

All students at Bethany College have an opportunity to complete internship courses within their academic program. Faculty advisors and the Career Center strongly encourage students to take advantage of internship opportunities as a way to distinguish their application for graduate school or employment.
