Nov. 12 – BETHANY, W. Va. – Freshman volleyball standout, Dakota McKenzie (Hopewell, Ohio/West Muskingum) and football senior quarterback, Matt Grimard (Lowell, Mass./Dracut) have been named the Student Athlete Advisory Committee’s Athletes of the Week, announced the Bethany SAAC on Tuesday.
McKenzie, who was recently named an All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference Honorable Mention selection, was arguably the most efficient offensive threat for the Bison in the team’s PAC Championship Tournament run. In the semifinal match against Westminster, Mckenzie totaled a career-high, 20 kills. It was just the third time this season that a Bison had totaled at least 20 kills in a game. In the championship final against Thomas More, McKenzie notched another 12 kills to finish the PAC tournament with 32 kills while hitting .246.
Despite missing nine games over the regular season, McKenzie finished fourth on the team with 223 kills. She really came on strong over the last 14 games, registering at least 10 kills in nine of those contests.
Grimard threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns in the Bison’s last contest against Thomas More College. Over the course of the contest, he also broke three Bethany records, surpassing single-season marks in passing completions (230), passing attempts (383) and passing yardage (2,684); all of which were records that he set during the 2012 campaign.
With one game to go in his career, Grimard currently holds 16 career, single-season and single-game records. He also has the opportunity to break two more before the end of the season as he is quickly closing in on the single-season offensive attempts record, as well as the single-season mark for total offensive yards.
Other nominees for the SAAC Athletes of the week included Bison swimming and diving standouts, sophomore Alexi Pyles (Los Angeles, Calif./Granada Hills Charter) on the women’s side and freshman Jeremy Starr (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) for the men.
